Lost-vivor: “The Man from Tallahassee”
Posted on March 21, 2007 @ 10:58 pm

Welcome to Week Thirteen of Lost-vivor — all the mystery and adventure of Lost with an added dash of Survivor-style competition. Here’s the deal: after each week’s Lost, I’ll award and deduct points from the characters based on their actions during the episode. I’ll tally up the Lost-vivor scores as the season progresses, and, at the end, we’ll declare a Lost Season Three champion! You can catch up on the action so far at the Lost-vivor archives.
Please note that the section ahead contains spoilers for last night’s episode of Lost. Proceed at your own risk.
I’ve been critical of Lost in recent weeks, but I thought “The Man from Tallahassee” delivered. At long last, we found out how Locke lost the use of his legs. It turns out the “mystery” was actually quite simple; his evil father pushed him out an eighth-story window. Nevertheless, it was an effective explanation that filled in another piece of Locke’s increasing tragic back-story. Moreover, I can’t say that I like the fact that Locke blew up the submarine (it certainly didn’t do him any favors in Lost-vivor), but his behavior in the past few episodes finally makes sense now (in a sick, twisted way). Locke doesn’t want to be rescued, and he’s willing to doom his fellow Flight 815 survivors to a lifetime on the island if that’s what it takes.
Meanwhile, Ben was simply amazing in this episode. His constant stream of wisecracks (”It’s not like there’s a button that says ’submerge,’ John”) added a welcome dose of levity to an otherwise grim episode. As for Jack, I have to admit I was hoping for a more sinister explanation for his behavior — maybe brainwashing or an evil twin or something kooky like that. Still, I can’t wait to see his reaction to Locke destroying the sub.
At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if Locke ends up staying behind with the Others rather than face his fellow castaways back at camp. I mean, who wants to explain to poor Nikki why there’s no more submarine?
Now, let’s take a look at this week’s scores!

I guess Week 13 was an unlucky number for Locke as he plummeted to last place in the Lost-vivor standings. Oh, how the mighty have fallen! And you know what that means; Jack is out of last place for the first time since the season began! Take a bow, Jack. You’ve earned it.
Here are your updated Lost-vivor standings:
- Sawyer (163)
- Desmond (153)
- Kate (134) (+2)
- Jin (122)
- Sayid (123) (+3)
- Hurley (118)
- Sun (110)
- Claire (107)
- Vincent (105)
- Nikki (97)
- Charlie (95)
- Paulo (93)
- Jack (89) (+5)
- Locke (75) (-35)
That’s it for Week Thirteen of Lost-vivor! Next week’s flashbacks will feature…wait, this can’t be right. Paulo and Nikki? Why do I get the feeling this will simultaneously be the worst episode of Lost and the best installment of Lost-vivor ever? Tune in next week to see how it turns out!
Meanwhile, with a little more than half the season behind us, would anyone like to take a stab at predicting the Lost-vivor champion? Personally, I like Vincent’s odds, but feel free to share your own prognostications in the comments.

Shouldn’t Sayid get at least a point for telling Alex her mother ins’t dead? Granted, I haven’t really been watching the show but that seemed significant to me.
Also, who is Ben? Locke said something about knowing who Ben is now and I didn’t get it. See comment above about bo longer being a regular Losthead.
My bets are on Desmond. He’s not very far behind Sawyer, who doesn’t seem like he’s going to be doing too well the rest of the season.
The MINUTE Ben said “I’ll let your friends go…as soon as you’ve left the island” I knew he was screwing Jack over. I thought this was a pretty awesome episode!
My prediction is that John has now pissed off Jack so bad that one of two things will happen…
a. Jack will desperately find a way to get off the island and totally redeem himself and win Lost-Vivor or…
b. Jack does something stupid and moves into negative points in the next couple of weeks and it’s all over for the Doc.
And if that’s the case, I agree that Vincent’s odds are looking good
I think that Ben is really healed, but he’s hiding it, the way Locke did when he hurt his leg. Remember? He’s going to use it to his advantage. I bet his ‘others’ don’t know everything there is to know about the island. This could prove a very interesting season! I just wonder why ben wanted him to blow up the communications station. Tricky, tricky!
John should get points for surviving an eight story fall out of a window! Plus kept the show going by blowing up the submarine. Lost without Jack? I don’t think so.
Maybe I’m the only nutjob out there that picked up on this, but everyone realizes that Locke put Ben in the wheel chair, right?
Locke knows how the island mojo works. Locke expressed interest in developing Walt, much like the Others. Walt had the ability to make stuff happen, and the island enhanced that, and the Others picked up on it. Walt was considered “good” by the Others, and Locke was considered “bad” so his abilities have caught the Others off guard. All of the weird pop ups on the island stem from people creating events/things on the island, i.e. Jack’s Dad, Kate’s horse, Hurley’s Dave, etc. This was alluded to by Ben’s weird explanation of the box. Locke, knowing how the island works, screwed Ben over and along with the island willed him into the wheelchair. Ben realized this and that’s why he’s placing a certain level of confidence in Locke. There appears to be a strange battle of wills taking place - Ben wills the plane to crash bringing him a surgeon, Locke wills the recovery to place him in a wheel chair, Ben wills Locke to blow up the sub (think Alex’s hint to Locke about manipulation). A conflict is being set up between the Island’s born and the Island’s chosen.
Friggin’ awesome, and the point is, Locke should get some points because his abilities to act as an Island wild card have given him the upperhand. Ben knows it too.
Jack was totally playing piano during his wedding reception flashback.
Indeed. Sayid should get a point for spilling the Rousseau beans!! I kept waiting and waiting and waiting for someone to say something.
Magic box? MAGIC BOX?! Was Ben just on the verge of spilling the beans to Locke about all the mysteries taking place on the island, only to have Locke tell him to shut up? Points deduction! MAJOR Points deduction!
Same for Kate, who instead of promptly asking Jack why he switched sides, opted to accuse him of being a traitor, twisting the conversation away from the important issues once again.
I swear, these have got to be the dumbest people you could ever strand on a mysterious island. It’s like watching an episode of Scooby-Doo where all Fred and Velma do is yell at people.
I completely agree with what people are saying on here. I was so proud of the LOST writer’s to have Sayid be the one to tell Alex about her mother… and you didn’t give him a single point??!?!?!?! That’s a shame…
Sayid should have definitely gotten points for filling Alex in about
Rousseau!
I don’t think Locke actually blew up the sub. He was wet when he came back onto the pier. I think he just moved the sub somewhere, in which case, give him back those 25 points!
The mob has spoken! You guys say Sayid deserved points for telling Alex about her mom, and I’m nothing if not a man of the people. His score for the week has been appropriately adjusted.
So much for the sanctity of Lost-vivor.
Woo hoo!
They killed off one of my favorite characters with Mr. Eko, and now they are killing of Locke emotionally for me. Geez, do they even want me to watch anymore? On one hand, Locke has managed to cause more devastation than one man should be able to (he’s blown up the hatch, the satellite station, and the submarine, what next?), but on the other hand he’s lost all of his cool “you can’t fake me out” spidey senses.
I liked the background story and all, but how could he let himself be talked into that when he knew Ben was tricking him? ARGH!!!
Found a link to your site from Pop Candy’s blog: http://blogs.usatoday.com/popcandy/?csp=1. I have to say, this site totally rocks! Thanks for making “Lost” doubly interesting to me; I’ll be back.
You know who put the magic box on the island right? It was the wizard.
