Reconfiguring the Datacorder

Converting the Datacorder into a homing beacon can one of the most troublesome puzzles in Space Quest 6. Since this is the copy protection for SQ6, I cannot distribute the solution. All of the information you need to solve the puzzle is on pages seven and twelve of the Popular Janitronics manual included with SQ6. If you've lost your copy, please contact Sierra about documentation replacement.

Since this puzzle oftens stumps players that actually have their copies of Popular Janitronics, the Broomcloset provides this guide, contributed generously by Spider-Dan, to help convert the Datacorder into a homing beacon.

Spider-Dan's Datacorder Guide

The first thing you will need to do is remove all of the plates from the datacorder, remove all of the chips from the plates (both plates and chips can be placed to the right of the datacorder), and switch off all of the IRKs. Then, use the step-by-step instructions below to interpret the clues in your manual:

  1. Clue (4) tells where to put the first plate and which IRK to set it at.
  2. Clues (a), (b), and (c) tell which chip to use on the plate from Step #1.
  3. Clues (a) and (2) tell where to put the second plate.
  4. Clue (5) tells where to put the third plate.
  5. Clue (1) tells where to put the fourth plate and which chip to put on it (this will be the second chip you install).
  6. Install the last plate.
  7. Clue (b) tells which plate to set the second IRK at.
  8. Clue (7) tells which array to set the third IRK at.
  9. Clue (3) tells which plate to set the fourth IRK at.
  10. Set the last IRK.
  11. Clue (6) tells where to put the third chip.
  12. Clue (5) tells where to put the fourth chip.
  13. Install the last chip, close the datacorder, and fire her up.

I hope this helps everyone get through the Datacorder puzzle a bit more easily. If you have any further questions, feel free to e-mail me. Just don't ask for the solution; you'd just be wasting your time.
