General Comments:
The Connie or Connie.1761 virus was received in August, 1994, and
appears to be from Taiwan. Connie is a memory resident fast infector
of .COM files, including COMMAND.COM.
When the first Connie infected program is executed, this virus will
install itself memory resident at the top of system memory but below
the 640K DOS boundary, not moving interrupt 12's return. Total system
and available free memory, as indicated by the DOS CHKDSK program,
will have decreased by 3,520 bytes. Interrupt 21 will be hooked by
the virus in memory.
Once the Connie virus is memory resident, it will infect .COM files,
including COMMAND.COM, when they are executed, opened, or copied.
Infected programs will have a file length increase of 1,761 bytes with
the virus being located at the end of the file. The program's date
and time in the DOS disk directory listing will not be altered. The
following text strings are encrypted within the Connie viral code:
"This is <Connie> Written by Dark Slayer in Keelung TAIWAN"
"P:\COMMAND.COM"
It is unknown what Connie does besides replicate.
Known variant(s) of Connie are:
Connie.1761.B: Received in October, 1994, Connie.1761.B is a very
minor variant of the Connie virus described above. It is
functionally equivalent to the original virus. The last
encrypted text string indicated above has been changed to:
"#:\COMMAND.COM"
Origin: Taiwan October, 1994.
Connie 2.0: Received in August, 1994, Connie 2.0 or Connie.2799
is based on the Connie virus described above. It's size in
memory is 5,984 bytes, hooking interrupt 21. It infects .COM
files, including COMMAND.COM, when they are executed. Files
infected with the Connie 2.0 virus will have a file length
increase of approximately 2,799 to 2,953 bytes with the virus
being located at the end of the file. The program's date and
time in the DOS disk directory listing will not be altered.
The following text strings are encrypted within the viral
code:
"This is Connie v2.0 Written by Dark Slayer in Keelung,
Taiwan"
"\COMMAND.COM"
Origin: Taiwan August, 1994.
