Re: translation exercises:1
coi pitr.
OK, here's my attempt at the sentences:
> 1-1. Translate into Lojban:
> a. The dog is man's best friend.
.i loi gerku ku cu traji le ka pendo loi remna ku kei
> b. What time is it?
.i ma cu tcika
> c. The weather is hot.
.i le tcima ku cu glare
> d. Amethyst is a valuable stone.
.i le jmerametista ku cu kargu kunra
{If one does not know a word is it legitimate to make up a le'avla on the fly.
What about using zircanjme (purple sand/silica gem)?}
> e. Turn the screw to the left.
.i ko cu cargau le klupe ku fo *le ma'u farna ku
{How does one say in the positive direction?}

In trigonometry the positive direction of anti-clockwise is derived from the
convention of drawing the axes of graph with the origin at the bottom left,
the increasing x goes to the right and increasing y goes up the page. Angles
subtended at the origin begin at the x axis at 0 and increase to +90 at the y
axis and on round. Perhaps + and - should be use for rotation.
> 1-2. Translate into English:
> a. ta cu b[a]lji nazbi ko'a
This is the bulbous nose of his.
> b. le tergu'i ku cu navni
The light [source] contains neon.
> c. la makdonaldz. cu gusta le festi ku
McDonalds' is a restaurant serving waste.
{I do not think that this has negative connotations. I could interpret this
as the McDonalds' chain are going ecological and serve offal to eco-minded
customers. "malfesti" would be good for the derogatory sense.}
> d. ti cu muzga la cakla ku
This is the museum of Chocolate.
> e. doi marca. .i me do cu prami
Marsha, something pertaining to you loves.
{OK, I know "me" should be "mi", but you are saying Marsha has an aspect of
love}
ki'e mi'e dn.
