Apostaphes and H's...

One of the questions I've had for a while is WHY the letter "H" was
taken out an replaced with the "'" (apostrophe)...

Almost all the other morphological changes make sense, except that one.

A parrellel question : has anyone come up with a useful way of generating
the "th" sound...?
