A low-fat guy in a low-carb world

Posted on April 16, 2004 @ 7:43 am

I realize that in this age of low-carb, Atkins-friendly dining, watching one’s fat grams and caloric intake is basically the dietary equivalent of splitting one’s skull open and releasing the evil spirits therein to cure a headache. I also recognize that grocery stores only have so much space on their shelves to devote to diet foods, and that they ultimately must stock what sells. Still, do they have to replace every low-fat and low-calorie product with low-carb alternatives?

I’m convinced the only reason I can still buy Diet Coke is that Coca-Cola already test-marketed Low-Carb Coke and discovered that consumers assumed “low-carb” meant “flat,” resulting in poor sales performance. (EDIT: I should have known.)

Why, Lord? Why? All I want os a low-fat granola bar! Is that too much to ask?

Tis the reason why I hate fads. People take things way too far. However, I’m lucky enough to still be able to find low-fat granola bars (s’mores are a fave).

Just give it another six months and something else will be the fad and take up all that shelf space. BTW - did you hear that pork rinds are the newest fad snack? yeck.

I’m right there with you; the S’mores granola bars are where it’s at. Our grocery stores don’t seem to be carrying them anymore, but there’s still a chance that the local Wal-Mart is still stocking them. I might have to stockpile a few dozen boxes to get me through this fad. ;)

Our wal-mart carries them, I know for a fact. (Thought about picking up a box yesterday…then went for oatmeal).

    The Sac is Back!
Good morning and welcome to the Cul-de-Sac, in which your devoted hostess takes a spin around her corner of the blogosphere and reports back on her findings. The Cul-de-Sac used to be a regular feature here at suburban blight,…

I have very low blood pressure and a normal resting pulse. When I exercise, it takes a lot of work to get my heart rate up. I have a screaming pantload of stamina on endurance machines — treadmills, bicycles, and especially the elliptical, which I could conceivably walk on forever; someday, I actually plan to try that.

I’m also more than 100 pounds overweight.

    Hmm.

I’d rather keep my insides in good health by exercising and eating right. I’d rather not gorge myself on fatty foods. I’d rather eat EVERYTHING in moderation than cut ANYTHING out completely (it prevents binge-eating… trust me).

And I’d rather go with what works, rather than what’s cool and hip and “now”.

I agree, atkins sucks… But at least there seems to be a growing trend for slightly more-healthy-in-general foods. For example, I saw feta cheese at subway yesterday! Ok, I dunno if that’s healthy precisely, but it is a lot yummier!
