Despite all his rage, et cetera, et cetera

As reported by CNN.com, Billy Corgan recently backed away from his oft-quoted statement that the Smashing Pumpkins broke up after “fighting the good fight against the Britneys of the world” and losing, now claiming that “the truth of the matter is that guitarist James Iha broke up the Smashing Pumpkins.” I don’t have any insightful commentary to add; I just know that there are at least a few fellow Pumpkins fans who read this blog.

The article also notes that Billy has a solo album, a DVD, and (ugh) a book of poetry on the way in the relatively near future.

What ever happened to Zwan? Are they still together? And whats with that book of poetry? Billy Corgan? Thats a little strange. I guess I can see how songwriting and such is like poetry….but…still. Thats weird.

Unfortunately, Zwan broke up last year. I really enjoyed their first album, too. Oh, well…I’m sure that I’ll end up giving Billy’s solo album a try. As for the poetry, though, I’ll probably pass. I’ve made so much fun of Jewel through the years that I’d seem like a bit of a hypocrite if I bought Billy’s book of poetry.

lets face facts, Billy Corgan broke up the pumpkins. james iha is the only other person in the band with genuine musical talent, so i’m sure egos collided at one point and billy’s ego won (billy corgan’s ego is the only one visible from space).

Yeah, I tend to take most of Billy’s statements with a grain of salt. After all, based on the interviews I’ve seen and read, he doesn’t seem like the easiest person to coexist with in a band. I’m sure it was as much Billy as James (and probably D’Arcy and Jimmy, too) that led to the break-up of the Pumpkins, but it’s interesting that Billy decided to point the finger at James now — nearly three years after the fact. Who knows what motivated it?

Perhaps the fact that James is rockin’ out with perfect circle?? Ahhh, if I didn’t love billy so much, I would be disappointed in him.

Looks like Zwan broke up the day my dog was born. Odd.

In defense of Billy’s ego—Hi, been a pumpkins fan for quite some time now, saw zwan play in SLC, where billy goes I follow, basically, i’ll buy the solo album too. if you wrote music that sold over 20 million albums wouldnt you be tempted to give in to your ego a bit too? he wrote all (99%) of the songs. the world competes for our will and for him to stick to his guns and make it work is nothing short of remarkable. if you were put in a room with billy and a guitar and he told you what to play, wouldnt you play it? (i know, i’m kind of on the outside looking in, i wasn’t with him for 13 years like james, that’s not the point though) who cares enough about sharing a gift to put ourselves on the line and throw ourselves at the mercy of the public? how much would you be willing to go through to do what you think is right. hopefully, more people than i’m giving credit to. so billy’s the guy in my book. when you’ve got it, you’ve got it, and not even you can deny it.
