I thought it was a euphemism. A euphemism!

In downtown Athens, about a block from my department, there’s a dingy little Chinese restaurant that everyone I know refers to as “bad Chinese”–as in “I’m in the mood for bad Chinese!” or “Who wants to go downtown for some bad Chinese?” Before I finally tried bad Chinese for the first time yesterday, I had operated under the assumption that the nickname was in jest since my friends seem to eat there all the time. After all, who would eat at a Chinese restaurant that he or she consciously acknowledges as not being good? Having sampled their cuisine, however, it looks like it’s time for a new working theory.

I’d be interested in checking this place out. call me a contrarian, but it’s always seemed to me that the dingiest of places, when it comes to asian food are the best… be it grocery stores or restaurants. Greasy noodles, soggy dumplings, dishwater soup? All that stuff is more authentic.

Then again, it could have truly sucked, I don’t discount that.

Also, I can’t really stand going to most Chinese restaurants anymore. This is especially true about buffets, but seeing as 90% of chinese restaurants are buffets now, we’re back at square one. After having real chinese food, I just can’t really stomach the Americanised versions too much. it’s like eating mcdonalds, but paying $12 for it.

Yeah, it’s primarily the grease that earns the place its “bad Chinese” reputation. Then again, it’s located on the busiest corner in town, offers $4 lunch specials, and has a huge beer selection. So, I guess it’s obvious how it stays in business.

Then again, there’s always the argument to be made that our beloved La Caretta back in Bristol was actually “bad Mexican,” but you won’t hear me complaining about that.

You know, if you ever make it up here during a weekday, we’ll go to Pepe’s. $6.00 mexican lunch buffet. Now that’s something I can handle.

Hey… La Carreta is much much MUCH better than anywhere in Charleston.
