The Hierarchy of Geeks

While scouring Best Buy (arch-nemesis of teedz) for a new cordless telephone yesterday, I noticed that the PC game Icewind Dale has recently hit the low, low price of ten bucks. I’ve been searching for a budget-priced computer game as of late to while away the hours, and I think a critically acclaimed CRPG might just do the trick. The fact that Icewind Dale is based on the official Dungeons & Dragons rules, however, raises an important question. Is the fact that I’m playing what amounts to a computer version of a Dungeon & Dragons game less geeky because I’m not playing a pen-and-paper campaign with a group of fellow RPGers, or is it in fact double geeky because it involves not only playing Dungeons & Dragons, but also using a computer to do so?
The dilemma made me think back the what may very well be the funniest thing ever produced by the now-defunct Brunching Shuttlecocks website: the absolutely hilarious Geek Hierarchy. From the looks of that chart, I can rest assured that I’ll remain at least a notch above the furries even if I succumb to the lure of Icewind Dale.

you are most certainly MORE geeky. on even the most basic level, roleplaying is socializing. its leaving the house, its hanging out with friends, its throwing back a few beers, its making off-color remarks about your best friend’s elf character, etc. i think that playing icewind dale, or evercrack or any other computer-based rpg is inherently geekier because not only is it a notorious geek past time, but its the same thing sans any human contact.
You know, when I was sitting in front of my computer this afternoon and ended up spending the better part of half an hour clicking the “reroll” button in Icewind Dale’s character generator in a vain attempt to achieve that perfect balance of wisdom and constitution for my half-elf cleric, I came to the realization that you hit the nail on the head, batman. CRPGs are, in fact, double geeky.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some sort of ancient evil to thwart.
and in the same respect, since sports are, at least in the majority opinion, a non-geeky endeavor, playing videogame sports cancells each other out and is neutrally geeky.
Hmm… I think you’re onto something here.
