In search of an e-mail client

I just stumbled across Eudora’s announcement that spam filtering features will no longer be available in their adware version and will instead require a paid installation in the future. That’s no fun. I’ve been using Eudora as my e-mail client for years, and I love it. These days, however, I receive way too much spam to operate without a junk filter or two (I currently use Eudora’s filtering system coupled with SpamAssassin, and I still have a fair amount of spam slip through).
Anyway, rather than paying $35 for Eudora, I’m considering moving to a new e-mail client. Any suggestions? I’m not a fan of Netscape/Mozilla/Thunderbird (too GUI) or Outlook Express (too socially irresponsible). What free options does that leave? Or, has Microsoft actually secured the latest versions of Outlook Express since I last used it a few years back? Assuming that I end up moving to something without built-in spam filtering, I’ve heard good things about POPFile.
I don’t know why I’m so indignant when it comes to the idea of paying for an e-mail client, but it just doesn’t seem right.

If Thunderbird is too GUI, I’m sure you could always get a new theme
I can also help you set up a bayesian filter on balance, like I’ve got. It’s fantastic. Then again, I dunno how you’d “reclassify” mistaken mail for it to learn, through a Winders UI.
I switched to Calypso Email about 5 years ago and never looked back. In 2001, the company that owned Calypso decided to drop the product. But this year, the lead programmer was convinced to continue the product for a new company. Since they couldn’t use the Calypso name, it is now called Courier Email (http://www.rosecitysoftware.com/Courier) and it has integrate POPFile support. I recently swicthed from IMAP to POP just so I could use it and I couldn’t be happier. POPFile catches about 98% of my spam and the reselts just keep getting better as it learns. So, that would be MY recommendation. If you have any questions about Courier or POPFile, feel free to email me!
Thanks for the suggestions, guys! I’m testing out Courier right now, and it seems promising. It has that simple, old school Eudora vibe with what looks like quite a bit more flexibility. Then again, it costs $30…
Meanwhile, no matter what theme I use, Thunderbird–just like anything else associated with Netscape or Mozilla–absolutely crawls on my system. There’s no way that a mail client should take more than five seconds to open a plain text message on a P3-500 with 128MB of RAM.
