I'm having some problems with the sound in SQ5. (SQ collection ver.) When I start the game it says "Unable to initialize your audio hardware" and then when it goes to the Sierra logo the sound is different then the way I remember it. I also tried the intro and the sound there was also wrong. Some bits were left out (i.e. the alarm with the simulator is deactivating). I checked a SQ5 soundtrack online and it sounded a lot different then the sound that comes out of my speakers. It kinda sounds like it's been MIDIed. I've tried changing the sound options with the install program in the SQ5 folder, but either it doesn't change the problem or the sound comes out of the PC internal speaker (like in SQ1 ega). I've also tried reinstalling SQ 5 from the disk and it didn't change anything. Can anyone help me out here? _________________ Attention Star Trek fans:

Oh, sorry about that. I'm usually extremely thorough when describing problems like this, I don't know how I forgot about that. I'm using Windows 98. _________________ Attention Star Trek fans:

It is having trouble initializing the WAV playback portion of your sound card. This frequently happens on faster computers.
Isn't there a patch somewhere that resolves this problem?

What type of sound card do you have? And do you set your music for Adlib or General MIDI? _________________ The quest for a decent signature continues.... |

I'm not really sure what type it is, but I set the option for adlib. _________________ Attention Star Trek fans:

That patch, gosierra.zip, is available at http://www.queststudios.com It's in the utilities section, I don't know the exact link off hand. _________________ The quest for a decent signature continues.... |

Does it do the same thing when you select "General MIDI" as your music option?
The only other thing I can think of is that the MIDI settings of your sound card have been messed up. Go to your start menu, Settings - Control Panel - Multimedia - and select the MIDI tab, and tell me what you have. _________________ The quest for a decent signature continues.... |

I also have Win98, and I have the same problem this fellow does. The music does actually play for me, but the sound is non-existant. If I try the Roland setting the game locks up altogether, and if I try Adlib, General MIDI, etc., I just get the error message and music, but no sound. I tried using the gosierra patch, but it didn't help. :(

Hokay, help is at hand people!
VDM sound is an Adlib/SB emulator which (whaddya know!) emulates Adlib/SB sound for any of Sierra's games..as far as I know, it doesn't do the audio, but still.
I tried it today, and it works with any Sierra game! (with, as always, a few exceptions) If you have AGI games setup with SB/MIDI, it enhances it further)

The Borg: I did that and found that the MIDI output thingy was set to YAMAHA SXG Driver. I changed it to AudioPCI MIDI Out and changed the SQ5 install option to General MIDI Sound Driver. Then I tried playing SQ5 again and it sounded right this time! Thanks. _________________ Attention Star Trek fans:

Er, Alistair... VDM Sound is only for Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows NT. It doesn't work on Windows 98, and since that's the OS that Eternal Wilco and I have, it's not going to help. Thanks for the try, though.

Go WinXP! ;D
- Alistair.
Seriously, WinXP/2000 users, VDM Sound runs speech/audio effects even if (like me) you don't have a SB/whatever card.
Hell, it saves me from havin' to partition the old HD (or any other drastic measure). _________________ Sierra Music Central- Little graveyard humour there!

Hey, Eternal Wilco! I have the same problem as you (might a little worse). After I got Win98, I couldn't run DOS games with SB or AdLib sounds. Strange, huh? It worked before. But here's the really strange part:
I found out that I had to run the Adventure Game Studio Demo Game EVERYTIME I had started the PC and wanted to play a DOS game with sound. It's really beginning to tick me off. I can tell that I have a soundcard named Yamaha OPL3-SAx, a 200MHz computer with 96 MB RAM. Can anyone tell me where to download a driver? _________________ "Would you mind not shooting at the thermonuclear weapons?" -John Travolta, Broken Arrow |
