Definatly the beeps in the Ega versions of the game. But as for SQ 4, 5, 6, Vga versions it needs the smoothness of the speakers.

I can't just forget about all those hours I've spent listening to the "beeps" and "bops"... But when I first heard Space Quest 3 through a decent soundcard, I was sold! No computer game beats the sound of Space Quest.

The PC speaker may not be that bad, but it's just that mine must be the loudest one in the world... when i've played DOS-games on my friends' computers, they all sound quite decent, but my PC speaker makes my head explode and our neighbors will come up here with burning torches etc...

Anyway, i use a program called AGISB with the old AGI games. It enables you to hear 4 sound channels at once thru your normal speakers instead of one loud bleeping.

Mean Streets had speech through the PC speaker, that really impressed me.

Justas:

It sounds like you have one of the original IBM PC/XT or PC/AT speakers. Those buggers were LOUD! Of course, they were aimed out the front of the machine through a vent hole, so there was nothing blocking the sound from coming straight through and out of the machine.

My suggestion would be to wrap your internal speaker in some packing foam. Not that hard peanut junk, the softer squishy foam padding. A layer or two would do wonders for lowering the volume.

BTW, I still have quite an afinity for the original PC speaker on those early Space Quests, but I can't go back on SQ3 and above to the original sounds from the PC speaker.

I liked the sound card support on 4-6. Not because I don't like beeps and blops, but its pretty hard to play a game at midnight when everyone is trying to sleep when..... all of a sudden......BEEP BOP BEEP BEEEP BLOP BO BOP!! Smile

PC Speaker sucks. Assuming that you have a working soundcard, it beats the pants off crappy beeping. Even the old AGI games are tons better with their multi-channel sounds enabled. Smile
