every time I feel comfortable, I'm zapped by a droid or zombied. Where is skimmer.

The skimmer is to the left of where you start. There's a computer in the glove compartment you'll need later, but in order to get out of here, you need to find the sewer entrance.

You avoid the droid by leaving the screen when you hear the music, and you can avoid the zombie by simply not walking near him.

You can also hide behind a steel pillar to avoid being seen by the Droid O' Death! Make sure you're playing the game with DOSBox (www.dosbox.com) to avoid the timing bugs. The latest version at the time of this message is 0.72. The Official SQ Collection has version 0.65. Without a slow-down utility you will have no time to react during any arcade sequences in the game. (Droid O' Death, entering the alien spaceship & time pod, the infamous Skate-O-Rama escape, etc.)
