Anyone run into the problem of not hearing speech in Space Quest 4? I just played 5 and 6, and the speech worked in them, so i'm thinking some configuration is needed, any ideas or suggestions?

In SQ4, sometimes the speech will not work if you are using a DOS install.
Else, you might need a SB card.

yeah sorry.... was thinking of some other game, not SQ5... brain fart... i dont think i have the dos version, its running the same way sq6 did.... and i have a soundblaster live card.

Is this the DOS or Windows version? And what operating system are you using? Also, tell us your processor speed and RAM. This will help us solve your problem.

Supposedly, Soundblaster Live cards allow sound inside a DOS box in Windows. (I don't know for certain, I've never used one)

However, the audblast.drv files in Sierra games tend to be buggy, so they don't always work even if the install program shows soundblaster to be compatible. :P

Therefore, a program called gosierra.zip was created. You can get it at:

Just click on main menu, then find the link to "Sierra Utilities".

i think missing the *.drv file may be the problem....

well i downloaded the new audblast.drv from sierra....
gosierra patched it.... still no sound... tried reinstalling
from the cd to get the sndblast.drv and its corrupting.... anyone know where to get the sndblast.drv for sq4?
cause gosierra worked on the audblast, but i dont
think thats the .drv file i use.

funny, i was missing all of those driver files, i think the cd is corrupt and/or skipping these files... but i got em now but when i gosierra the sndblast.drv one i get...

maybe cause of the corruption i am missing more files...

yep, its off the 2cd Space Quest Collection CD....
but the CD is really bad underneath, and that
is why i think its not reading right... i even get
copy errors when installing, but the game runs
fine once everything is done.

Plus, I dont see why you'd ask such a question,
when the issue is with gosierra (not a regular game
file) and a sndblast.drv file (that wasnt with the game
either) its not a game issue, its a gosierra error.

I checked and I wasnt missing any files cept the .drv ones, so maybe one of the regular ones is corrupt,
but i doubt it.... BUT if the sndblast.drv wont even
patch.... that may be the entire problem why i cant
get speech

See what I miss when I leave for three days??? ;D

The CD version of SQ4 doesn't use sndblast.drv, it uses audblast.drv for its sound, so you don't need to worry about patching sndblast.drv. (sndblast.drv won't work with the CD version of SQ4)
