A tale of scoundrels, consumer electronics, and writer’s block — full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

Posted on August 17, 2007 @ 12:16 am

Sigh…it’s been one of those days. First, I was alerted that some jerkhole is selling t-shirts on eBay featuring my “Snape’s on a Plane” design without bothering to ask my permission. I’m reminded of a quote from B-movie idol Bruce Campbell: “Imitation is indeed a form of flattery, but paying a guy is an even better form.”

Then, just a few hours later, the unthinkable happened: my cherished iPod shuffled off the mortal coil. It’s dead, Jim. Kaput. Pining for the fjords and all that. I immediately swore that I’d wait at least a few months to replace it and maybe even comparison shop some non-Apple MP3 players. Six hours later, I was in the process of charging up a brand new silver iPod nano. Damn you, Steve Jobs! (he says, shaking his fist in vain)

To top it all off, I’m in a blog funk. It’s one of those deals where I come up with an idea for an entry, decide it’s not actually clever and/or funny enough to post, and end up deleting it. Then, the next day, I come up with another idea. Unfortunately, it’s not as good as the idea I deleted the day before, so obviously I can’t go posting the new idea either. Anyway, it usually goes on like that for several days until I decide I need to post something — clever or not — just to break the cycle.

So, I guess this takes care of that. Thank you, and goodnight.

That sucks about the t-shirt. Is there nothing you can do?

Steve did a great job with the ipods I think. luckily I’ve been good about staying away. I did buy one for my wife though. :P

I hear you about the blog funk, except that’s everyday for me. I just end up posting whatever is stupid anyways, just because if I didn’t, I wouldn’t have any posts. Or I’d just come up with a new design and post about my new design. LOL I’m more of a comment blogger. Hehe.

and here I thought you were on vacation or something. bummer about the blog funk.
a few months without an Ipod? no way in hell could i last that long.
i have absolutely no problem being a zombie in Jobs’ Mac army.
just hit play and make sure my battery doesn’t die.

i don’t delete the bad entries. i just set them to draft. figuring maybe at some point i can salvage something. i never go back, mind you. and when i think about all those half-ass entries cluttering the database, i get an itch to delete them all but i’m far too fond of my words apparently, the good and the bad.

how about a comparison between the new flash gordon to the old flash gordon. nothing seems to get people revved up like you taking jabs or endorsing some old tv show.
    :D

I have spent ages trying non-iPod DAPs, and let me be the first to reassure you that the iPods really are the best deal out there. I’m surprised you got six hours without one; when my Creative Zen Sleek died, I had new player inside the hour. The DAPs are my security blanket.

Sorry to hear about the ipod - been missing the Friday Shuffles.

I’d like to be able to give you advice about blogger’s block, but my solution has long been to just not post anything. I’ve got drafts with titles that no longer mean anything to me (”Scenes from the cubicles #2″… which is blank, and I never even posted #1) and some dating back over two years.

How about writing about starting up your own spreadshirt/skreener/cafepress t-shirt store?

You could send an email to Warner Bros to tip them off. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have the right to sell merchandise with Snape’s likeness on it.

I usually break blog-block by spending some time surfing. I start with Drudge. Fark usually has something silly to post on. If all else fails, I start trolling through the blog rolls of sites I frequent. If I make it that far and can’t find anything blogworthy, I know it was not meant to be and I curl up under my desk for a few days praying for sweet death.

Sorry to hear that some scum-sucker in his mom’s basement is selling the T-shirts. If you’d been selling them I would have bought one! :)

I own a 2 GB black nano (one of the original versions) and it is pretty cool. Though I dislike how iTunes is suck a memory hog. You should also hang onto your old ‘pod. It’s likely to come back to life in a few months. A friend’s ipod (generation 1, I think) died and then came back to life several months and a new video ipod later. All the music was fine, the clock and date were still correct, the battery just needed to be charged. :D
