Welcome to the twenty-second installment of Lost-vivor — all the mystery and adventure of Lost with an added dash of Survivor-style competition! Please note that the section ahead contains spoilers for the Lost season finale. Proceed at your own risk.
I’ll admit it: I was certain that Lost was in the midst of an irreversible downward trend after the first six episodes of the season. That it was done for. That it had jumped the DHARMA shark. Then, after the hiatus, the show came back and started steadily building momentum. Sure, a bad episode still popped up every now and then (e.g. the secret origin of Jack’s tattoo), but the show finally started to feel like it was going somewhere for the first time in a long time. In turn, I thought that “Through the Looking Glass” not only served as a satisfying finale, but also opened up countless storytelling avenues for the show’s remaining remaining seasons.
First things first — I really dig the “flash forward” concept. I have no idea how the series will pick up next season, but that’s all part of the fun. Will we rejoin Jack and Kate in the “present” next season while they flash back to their rescue from the island? Whose funeral did nobody attend? Is Kate still with Sawyer? Did everyone leave the island, or did some Losties stay behind? If Penny didn’t send Naomi, who did? So many questions and only 48 episodes left to answer them!
Following up on last week, I thought Charlie’s death was handled wonderfully. I was sick of the character when the season began, but the last two episodes have definitely reminded me of why I liked him so much in the first place. Speaking of characters I’m learning to like again, I felt that Matthew Fox gave one of his strongest performances as Jack in a long time — both in the flashback and on the island.
I didn’t see Walt’s appearance coming, but I wish the finale had focused a bit more on Locke. I know this was Jack’s story, but I’d at least like to know how Locke got out of the pit. And was Walt really there, or was he mentally projecting himself from off the island? I know, I know — next season.
I could ramble on for hours about the finale, but let’s just cut to the chase and look at this week’s scores. We’ve got a Lost-vivor champion to crown here, people!

The moment is finally upon us. Allow me to present the final Lost-vivor standings for Season Three. Drum roll, please:
- Sayid (189) (+33)
- Desmond (186) (+22)
- Kate (182) (+52)
- Sawyer (182) (+19)
- Hurley (178) (+37)
- Jack (177) (+85)
- Jin (146) (+5)
- Vincent (115) (+3)
- Sun (113)
- Claire (107)
- Locke (100) (+10)
- Juliet (92) (+1)
- Naomi (67) (-45)
That’s right, ladies and gentlemen — Sayid is your come-from-behind Lost-vivor Season Three Champion! After a slow start, Sayid finally got on track thanks to his overall ass-kicking awesomeness. Best of all, he didn’t even need to torture anyone to win the big prize. Suck it, Jack Bauer.
With Sayid officially crowned the Season Three Champion, that brings us to the Viewer’s Choice Award — your chance to make your voice heard and vote for your favorite Lost-vivor. The race started off close, but a clear winner emerged before too long. I should have seen it coming, brotha.
After landing in second place in the Lost-vivor rankings, Desmond won the Viewer’s Choice poll in a landslide with a commanding 30% of the total vote. Sawyer came in second with 17%, with Sayid rounding out the top three at 14%.
That, my friends, brings Lost-vivor to a close (at least for this season). Thanks so much to everyone out there who took the time to read and comment throughout the season. I’ve had an absolute blast writing recaps each week’s recap, and I can’t wait to give it another whirl next season. Meanwhile, if you discovered Apropos of Something through Lost-vivor, feel free to check out the rest of the blog for daily doses of pop culture geekiness.
Take care!
Ok,
So if the whole deal with Jack was present day, or at least Post-Island, then why did he tell his boss “Go upstairs and if my dad is drunker than I am, you can fire me right now.”
Wasn’t his dad’s death the whole reason he was in Australia in the first place!?!?!?! Hmmmm…ponder that!
Good catch, Justin!
Either the writers made a flub here to keep us in the dark or … Jack’s dad was resurrected on the island. Of the two, I think the former is more likely
One third possibility just occurred to me: When they got off the island they somehow travelled back in time and Jack was able to prevent his father’s death. Though I don’t think this was likely given that Jack and Kate both have “golden tickets” from Oceanic Airlines (i.e. the crash did take place in the outside world)
I guess I just assumed that Jack was so strung out on pills that he wasn’t lucid when he mentioned his father.
I know it means nothing now, but I just knew that was post island! Yikes, what a cliffhanger; lots of questions now. I wondered the same thing about Jack’s comment about his dad too. But I think by the look the other doctor acted along with his reaction was meant to tell us he was obviously not in the right mental state. I really don’t like that they did this, I hope this just a hypothetical future and can be changed by their actions on the island. I wonder how Sawyer died? Did he count as “1 of the 5 deaths?”
Speaking of death, that sucks that Charlie actually died. I didn’t think it was going to happen. It was a good way to go out though.
And your LOST-IVOR winner is…DESMOND!!!
I think his ass kicking in the Looking Glass sealed the win for him. That is unless Hurley got a lot of bonus points for his van splattering or Sayid raced ahead with that badass sweep kick-neck-break-maneuver! That ROCKED!
Anyway, see you in 8 months!!!
I thought Jack was just bonkers from the drugs and drinkin’ and that’s why the doctor looked at him so pityingly when Jack said to get his dad. He also said his dad was “out of town” or whatever when he was trying to get his prescription filled. So: hmm.
So many more questions than answers! I mean, other than the almighty WHAT?! that roared across the land when the episode ended. Whose funeral did nobody go to? Who is Kate’s “he”?
Hurley and Sayid are going to earn mad points this time around for their respective assassination skills. Death by hippie van! Death by leglock with arms tied! What a fantastic sequence that was!
more than anything, i’m just sad. silly as that is. sad about charlie’s death and jack’s spiraling into crazy, pill-popping, booze-guzzling land. boo. oh, and, not that i was ever a fan of kate’s but that she turned away from him too is low. no wonder he wants to go back to the island. life afterwards seems pretty crappy.
I really hope that the flashforwards were in Hypothetical Future Land and not where the show is going. It looks quite depressing. However, if it is in Hypothetical Future Land, and something else happens, it would mean that Charlie died for nothing. There is also a small part of me that is hoping that Charlie somehow becomes not-dead. He was finally reaching his potential as a fully developed character! It’s just not right to kill him off NOW.
> Whose funeral did nobody go to? Who is Kate’s “he”?
Here are my thoughts on this: http://blog.codedread.com/archives/2007/05/23/thoughts-on-the-lost-season-3-finale/ (SPOILER FOR ANYONE WHO HAS NOT SEEN THE EPISODE YET)
By my count, the “5 deaths” were (in chronological order):
- Locke’s father
- Tom Friendly
- Patchy (not confirmed)
- Charlie
- Naomi
- someone in Jack’s flash-forwards (my guess is Ben)
I don’t know if the two chicks in the Looking Glass (Bonnie and ????) or a bunch of the Others (Ryan?) count because they were pretty minor characters that only appeared in these last couple episodes. But hey, there was a lot of death and things blowing up this episode!
On my TIVO, I could pause it when Jack looks at the paper before going into the funeral home. The name of the man who died starts with a J, and the last name ends in aham or something like that. I’m guessing it’s Jacob, who we haven’t met yet but who probably is the key to this whole thing. We’ll see.
pea — Let it be noted that I’ve always been a fan of Kate’s butt.
Jess — Can we deduct points from Jack for the awful fake beard he found it necessary to wear around after they got off of the island?
Also - As good as this episode was, did anyone else have flashbacks to the made-for-TV-movie “Return to Gilligan’s Island”, where the castaways found that life on the island was much better than life back on the mainland?
Desmond should get major point deduction for not making sure the eye-patch guy is contained.
My question is whether Sawyer will earn points or lose them for killing Tom. I mean, Tom prevented Sayid et. al. from being killed, and he surrendered. Heck, did Tom kill anyone during his stint on the island? Poor guy…
“Desmond should get major point deduction for not making sure the eye-patch guy is contained.”
My husband and I were WARNING them! The Russian doesn’t die. He’s like Boris the Bullet Dodger from Snatch.
And, points to Sawyer for shooting Tom.
Am I the only one that thought Charlie could have made it if he tried?
I have to agree with Veronica about the Russian. I asked my sister was the Russian really dead until they showed him with in the water.
I was trying to figure out whose funeral it was. It was in a black / Latino neighborhood so I was thinking it was Michael but then why wasn’t Walt there. Or maybe Hurely but everyone loves Hurley.
Also why isn’t Kate in jail? Just because she survived the island doesn’t mean she can get time served on her sentence.
If it was Hurley, the casket would have been considerably larger.
That was a great recap! I wish Vince had been in the van, too? Where does that silly boy go when the action gets hot?
And I can’t believe Sayid has been crowned the sole Lost-vivor! Awesome!
What a great episode last night. THAT is why I watch Lost.
Sylar +10
Thats fricking funny. I say Peter Petrelli is still alive. And that Hiro’s dad is Kensi(sp?) in the armor at the end
Anyway back to Lost.
Good to know that the Russian really needs the eye patch not for fashion. And is immune to grenades as well. So if you survive a plane crash, they give you a “gold” card. I thought charlie could fit through that porthole. Okay the future/flashforward thing has totally thrown me off. Please dont make it into it’s all in his oxy-delusional head. Like you I lost confidence in the show mid-season. But damn those writers slapped me in face, twice, and I want more.
Thanks for your Lost-vivor
I can totally see Sayid being the winner of Lost-vivor. I thought I’d debate Kate and Jack each getting 50 points (for all we know, all the other characters also made it off the island) and because the other characters in the top standing (Sawyer, Desmond, Hurley) made it to the top ranking on their own merits throughout the season. But oh well, it didn’t affect the ultimate winner anyway.
Btw, if the first episode of next season shows that all the other charcters made it off the island, will they each start at 150 points? That’s a significant penalty for Jack/Kate next year
laughed out loud at the Sylar shout-out. nice.
I knew that Charlie’s death was imminent, but it sure wasn’t handled well. It seemed unnecessary.
1) hold breath, swim out porthole (looked big enough)
2) leave the door open. a building that large, before it filled you’d have plenty of time to don scuba gear and read manual on how to use rebreather
3) LOCK THE DOOR FROM THE OTHER SIDE
Not always in agreement with your scoring, but I’m happy with both season 3 winners. And yes, Jack’s future self’s life is crappy now, but he’s not done yet…
who is Sylar????
Vincent got robbed!
My heart belongs to Desmond, but rock on, Sayid!! Didn’t Jack keep seeing his dad in his rearview mirror? Or did I dream that?
3 CHEERS FOR SAYID!!! I’m glad he won. He is my favorite Lostie, I even voted for him for the People’s Choice. I tell you, last night, even though I didn’t think he was really dead because they didn’t actually show him die, I was about to swear off the show forever. If they would have killed Sayid I would have stopped watching!
I really think that funeral that Jack went to was Sawyer’s. It fits in why he called Kate and also fits in with the “J” on the obituary since his name is James. I need to go watch all those “flash forwards” again to see if I missed anything. Now that we know for certain it was the future I probably missed some stuff. Like when the guy said that Jack was twice a hero, I’m guessing the 1st time was when he got everyone off the island.
And Charlie should have totally lived. Once the water covered the port hole he could have gotten out easily or, like someone said, the best idea would have been to shut the door behind the water or just go grab the scuba gear and swim out. Scuba gear only takes a minute to put together, the Looking Glass would have taken much longer to fill up. And even if they don’t have scuba gear I think they could have just swam out. It didn’t take them that long to swim down and it is much, much easier to swim up then down. They may have gotten a little of bends, but not enough to seriously harm them.
Anyway, thanks for a great season Jess. It’s been great reading each week!
Thank you for an entertaining season of Lost-Vivor. I’m already counting the days until next season. Way too far away.
Last night was awesome! Hurley, Charlie, Desmond, Sayid, Jack, Sawyer, Bernard, Jin…all of them were incredible…well, Bernard got a little scared, but let’s give him a break since he is an old guy and as Rose indicated not “Rambo.”
Did anyone besides me notice during the flash forward when Jack was making a phone call…he was in his vehicle and his head leaned forward towards the steering wheel of the car, that he began the message with “Penny”. I found that very interesting. Why was he leaving a message for Penny?
Was the flash forward given to Jack perhaps from the island?…so he could see that life after the island was not so great and maybe stop his efforts???
Has anyone noticed that Richard never ages! When the Dharma group was killed by Ben Richard looked the same as he appears now. Was this on purpose? And, has the island made Mikhail immortal? I think too much!
Anyway, this was a great season and a great website! I am so excited Sayid won! I love that guy…and I especially loved the feet and leg stuff he had going on last night! What a guy!
Regarding who is dead. Looked like a poorer neighborhood. I personally think it’s Sawyer, who’s first name is James. Which would explain why Jack expected Kate to be there. Then again, Locke’s first name was John and he was not well liked by the Losties considering his defection and attempt to stop the rescue. That would explain no one turning up.
I think Jack’s father never died. Ben’s made it obvious that everyone was manipulated onto that island. I think it was all a ruse to get Jack on that plane. Also explains why the mix-up at the ticket counter (shown as a flash back in the beginning of the show) was fixed.
I would like to note Kate should get serious points deducted for pulling the typical girl bullshit of pushing someone away then being all concerned when the person actually distances themselves. She treated Sawyer like crap when there were suddenly Losties to witness her affection then got up in his face when he stopped puppy-dogging for her. I’m really starting to hate Kate.
Charlie’s death was stupid. He had enough time to exchange all kinds of meaniful looks with Desmond. He could have zipped out the door and closed it from the other side easily. It was dumb. Though go Charlie for communicating important info before taking the last swim to Davy Jones’ locker.
A random amusement: After the fourth time Hurley was rebuffed as ‘useless’ to any plans I thought ‘That’s it, Hurley’s going to drop a pair of big brass ones and kill somebody to prove himself’. And then WHAM! He goes all Crazy Taxi on an Other. Go Hurley!
Last, thanks for runnig this. I honestly watch the show with this little series in mind. It’s great fun. Thanks again!
Des is my favorite, but I agree that Sayid gets major points for that crazy foot action. And Des, dude, ALWAYS MAKE SURE THE BAD GUY IS DEAD. Geez.
P.S. I hate Juliet too.
Oh, you were just poking me with a stick with that Sylar thing, weren’t you? I did think last night, “Good thing you’re not scoring Mikhail on this thing officially…”
Yay for Sayid pulling it out! Though Desmond as runner-up ain’t too shabby either.
Great episode and great recap. I can’t believe we have to wait this log for another Lost-vivor… I mean Lost…
Not a big fan of giving Kate and Jack mad points for being off the island, but at least Hurley got +30 for the greatest kill ever - hippie bus on the beach! That’s a sad way to got. They certainly redeemed Charlie these last couple of episodes - I was just glad that he was able to tell Desmond about the boat before biting it. Good for him.
Love the Sylar reference - but who didn’t see that coming?
Oh yeah, and Jack should have lost points for that beard. It was terrible. Worst part of the episode was having to see that terrible ’stache clumsily glued over his lip.
thanks for a great season of Lostvivor Jess!
[...] for the Season 3 champion. Technorati Tags: lost, through the looking glass, literature, books, sawyer, others, locke, [...]
Jess, i have to give you mad props for your Lost-vivor - sometimes I’ve had trouble resisting reading your recap before I’d seen the episode because i couldn’t wait to see what you’d written this time. can’t wait for next season.
Thanks for a really fun season of Lost-vivor. I guess I could say that Lost-vivor is one of the biggest reasons I watch Lost.
So thanks again, Jess!
Thanks for doing Lost-vivor. I look forward to the next season with everyone here on the site! This site is awesome!
Awesome, but I didn’t think Sayid was that great this season. His plan to rescue Jack got him captured. His plan to blow up the others got him captured. And he just let Juliet & Jack do whatever they damn well pleased. He was also way too trusting of this Naomi character. I think his character was pretty weak this season.
Jack definitely came around to being the Jack I’ve always wanted him to be. Punching people in the face, actually listening when someone tells him to not risk his life cause he needs to be the leader. The only downside was telling Kate he loved her, what a jerk :\
I think the superstar this season was Sawyer. He really came around as a character, and while staying consistent has been really impressive. Both in the way he’s handling himself, and the things he’s had to deal with. I think he was definitely the best character this season.
I like what you’re doing here, although I’ve only caught this one so I’m not sure what the premise was like all along. It’s cool though.
As far as the Sawyer -5 points because Tom Surrendered, I think he reminded us of why that didn’t matter with the line “That’s for taking the kid off the boat”. A lot of us liked Tom Friendly, but c’mon, he was a douche and deserved to die.
Oh, wow…I’m really late getting in here to reply to everyone’s comments. Rather than take them one at a time, let me just say thanks to everyone who has read Lost-vivor this season. Your feedback has made the whole endeavor incredibly rewarding. When I started the game several months ago, I wasn’t sure if I’d want to come back for the fourth season. Now, there’s no way I could stay away. It’s way too much fun.
@Quelyn: Oops! I just realized my blog’s spam filter ate your comment. I recovered it manually, so hopefully it will learn you’re one of the “good guys.” If you have any problems in the future, just let me know and I’ll beat said spam filter with a shoe.
I definately think the fast forward with Jack, and him mentioning his dad, was a clear sign that there in fact is time travel going on. I think Desmond, (or maybe even Locke I think he sees the future too) finds a way to meddle in the past to change the future. It’ll be awesome to see it all play out.
And how bad-ass was it that Hurley saved the day!
I’m hijacking internet right now, so I can’t say everything that I loved about Lost-vivor this season, but thank you so much for doing this. My Thursday mornings were always a little more fun thanks to this.
Ps, was that a Marvin the Martian shout out in Jins section?
¿why is naomi still in the game? I don’t think she survived that knife, specially since nobody went to help her even after locke left
@Daniel: Yep, it was a Marvin reference. Shameless, I know.
@Yeyo: Wow…I can’t believe I forgot to deduct points for Naomi getting knifed. It’s been fixed now. Thanks!
Thanks so much for another awesome “Lost-vivor”! It makes my Thursdays very happy! I do enjoy the rest of Apropos of Something and will continue reading as long as you continue writing, or typing really. Can’t wait until next season . . . next February! Yikes!
I think Charlie knew he could have tried to live but he wanted everyone to get rescued which meant dying the way Desmond predicted. He had to drown in that room else Claire would not get to go home. Self-sacrifice for love.
In reference to people questioning why Charlie did not escape when he could of:
He had to die to fulfill Desmond’s dream. He sacrificed himself to get Claire and her baby off the island.
Crazy season finale!!!!I loved the way things were blown up and people were killed.Although i know for a fact that Charlie (best character) most deffinitley did not have to die. I hated the whole idea of Charlie dying. It was an unending process, he was saved by Desmond way too many times!Loved how Locke was healed and stabbed Naomi i just wish he would’ve shot the radio. The future off the island looks very depressing. I also loved that the characters finally came out with things they wouldnt usually say, as if they wouldnt see each other again so mine as well. My two favs “you screwing Jack yet?” and “because i love you”. Cant wait until the next season some things are bugging me but i think ive figured things out. I think that Juliet died because her name does start with a J and i saw it on the paper. No one came because she hadnt been in touch with the real world for about three years. Kate wouldnt come to the funeral because she hated juliet. Kate married sawyer. Kate doesnt like jack anymore because he seems crazy and on drugs. Jack was going to jump because he had lost the forth person he loved and was alone. Sawyer diffenitely did not die because Jack didnt care that much about sawyer and kate loved him she would go.Im preaty sure i have it right but please leave a comment if you have more info. Thanx for listening!oh and by the way Sayid man that was about the sweetest move on Lost or even on abc AWESOME!
I also have to speak for the skate fans on behalf of sawyer being a complete butt to Kate. He should have lost points for that. Did he not see thats how Jack lost kate. Oh and i could not stand that kiss. Juliet is a weirdo and way to old for jack! Sorry jacket fans but they just do not work together!I also agree even though i do love watching the relationships grow that the shows im most hooked on are the ones without Jack, Kate and Sawyer. I hope that Charlie is brought back to life the way that micael always is. I think everyone would agree that he is the biggest mystery on the island. I hope in the next season we arent in the future looking back on the island because there are a lot of questions to be answered. Lost keeps digging itself deeper in questions that are never answered and i have a feeling they cant all be explained in two seasons unless it is done in a crappy way or we are left hanging. Those writers need to work on answering questions instead of making them or their gonna loose their veiwers.
left unanswered, Lostnerd
I have a question. Why isnt Kate in jail? She was arrested when she got on the plane. Also why would kate and sawyer be so happy to get off the island if they knew they were going to be arrested?and what was Jack so happy to get back to. Seems like none of the survivors really knew what they were gonna do once they got off the island. And now after ive seen the third season the island doesnt seem that bad they have plenty food enough water things to do people to talk to. If i was one of the survivors i wouldnt be able to sleep at night because i would want to know more about the island. I also think that the survivors dont talk enough about what happens on the island there are things left untold and problems are created that could’ve been prevented in the first place.
I just watched season finale… Woow… I agree with most of the comments here and I like Lost-vivor very much.
I just want to say something about Charlie death. I know it could be avoided but:
1) He could have died many times before this so I dont complain (I am sorry however, I like character very much)…
2) He kind of wanted to die, so Desmonds vision would come true (it is like condition) Charlie was determined to save Claire and Aaron… and Desmond told him that he must die if choper is to come… So it is obvious that Charlie could have sevad himself but he closed that door with pourpose, he wanted for Desmond vision to come true.
I cant wait for season 4
sry for my bad english, cheers!
“Used those island tracking skills they never really explained how she learned to confirm that Ben was alone: +3″
They were explained in season one. Her father (the army dude, not the redneck) taught her when she was young.
