Lost-vivor: “D.O.C.”
Posted on April 25, 2007 @ 11:13 pm

Welcome to Week Eighteen of Lost-vivor — all the mystery and adventure of Lost with an added dash of Survivor-style competition! Note that the section ahead contains spoilers for last night’s episode of Lost. Proceed at your own risk.
“D.O.C.” wasn’t the most exciting episode of the season, but I’ll give the writers credit for offering up some interesting revelations. For instance, Juliet and Mikhail officially confirmed that the island has mysterious healing properties. Yes, we’ve all been running on that assumption ever since Locke regained the use of his legs back in the pilot episode, but it’s good to hear it corroborated by people who are presumably in the know. We also found out that Jin is the father of Sun’s unborn baby. As I said last week, I was hoping it would turn out to be Bernard’s, but I guess that was a long shot from the start. Finally, the big twist at the end — Naomi telling Hurley that Flight 815 was recovered with no survivors — certainly shakes things up a bit. I have to admit I never saw that coming, and I can’t wait to see where they go with it.
I really dug Sun’s flashback, too. It wasn’t anything Earth-shattering, but it was sweet seeing Sun and Jin as newlyweds again — before Jin’s job started taking its toll on their relationship. Also, isn’t Yoon-jin Kim (the actress who plays Sun) just stunning in her flashback sequences? It’s amazing how the change in hair, makeup, and wardrobe makes her look at least ten years younger. Good stuff.
Oh, and does Juliet’s message to Ben suggest that Kate might also be pregnant? If so, did the Others manipulate Kate and Sawyer into having steamy jungle-cage sex just to take advantage of those island-induced sperm counts? Curiouser and curiouser.
I’ll save further speculation for the water cooler here at Apropos Headquarters tomorrow morning. In the meantime, let’s starting assigning some points!

A fairly low-key episode means no huge shakeups in the Lost-vivor standings. Jin passed Sayid to move into fourth place, while Desmond holds on to the lead after slipping ever so slightly. With only a few more episodes left this season, I’d say there are at least six Lost-vivors in a position to seriously contend for the championship. All it would take to totally redefine the playing field is one big move by someone like Kate or Sayid. Of course, Jack might do something incredibly awesome in the finale and rocket into first place. Well, not really. But it’s fun to use our imaginations, right?
After eighteen weeks of highly-scientific Lost-vivor scoring, here are the latest standings:
- Desmond (162) (-3)
- Sawyer (153)
- Hurley (139) (-4)
- Jin (136) (+8)
- Sayid (129)
- Kate (126)
- Sun (114) (+1)
- Naomi (109) (+4)
- Vincent (109)
- Charlie (104) (+2)
- Claire (103)
- Juliet (93) (-4)
- Jack (76) (-1)
- Locke (67)
As always, thanks for reading Lost-vivor! Tune in next week as we finally catch up with Locke and find out if he’s enjoyed his stay with the Others. The promos suggest that he has broken away from Ben and company. Why? My bet is they didn’t invite him to join their intra-island two-hand touch football team. Of course, knowing Locke, he’d probably just blow up one of their goalposts or something.
See you next time!

Is it sad that I’ve been hitting refresh for the past ten minutes waiting for your write-up?
This episode was a total mixed bag - Jin and Sun were pretty awesome and have just about become my favorite characters. Jin’s takedown of eyepatch guy was great. But I’m sick of them letting the others go - bad move on Desmond’s part, even if he did totally threaten him with a flare gun.
Another great post. And here’s hoping that I still get to claim FIRST by the time I hit Submit!
Hi, long time poster, first time reader — or something like that.
Anyway, how could you totally disregard Sun’s “Counter-Threat” to Jin’s extorting whore of a mother? “He thinks you’re dead, don’t make me make it so.”
Yes, this was important enough that I post it…
Thom: Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Greg: Oops! I can’t believe I didn’t score that. Thanks for the reminder; it’s in there now.
Does anyone know what Naomi was saying when she was speaking in other languages? I’m sure it was not thank you.
Jeannie: Lostpedia claims she was saying “I am not alone” in Portuguese after Mikhail saved her. I’m not sure if that’s accurate, but Lostpedia is usually on top of these things.
I’m assuming the Flight 815 bombshell is the result of a cover-up by Hanso…
Again, you’re being too hard on Juliet. Maybe I’m biased because she’s so hot, but after she recorded her message to Ben, she made it pretty clear that she hates him and will probably end up siding with our heroes. She should get some points for that.
And Jack only left the garden because Sun didn’t want him there. Whether or not he really planned to help is questionable, but he was concerned about her pregnancy and she basically told him to “fuck off.”
[...] If this were a blogging Meme think about how much better Thursdays might be if we had more than Lost-Vivor to look forward to in our scheduled reading [...]
I couldn’t wait to see what points Jin got for going kung fu on patch guy!
Heck yea they set up Kate and Sawyer! They were on her like flies on shit when she tried to let him out of the cage, but when she snuck in for the nookie, they suddenly didn’t see them? Mmmm hmm. There goes her future.
I agree with Jeff…I think its a cover up to make it look like they all died, so no one would come after them on the island.
low blow with the sanjaya photo. the woman is beautiful and you compare her to a no-talent, no-style having boy? ouch.
i love lost-vivor and you know i ♥ you madly but we are so at odds with the whole jack situation. it’s no doubt love making me blind but i still believe he’ll make good in the end. you, on the other hand, are just out to get him. i bet when he gets everyone off the island you’ll give him a point for it, but deduct 99 for not doing it sooner.
blah.
I think the writers of “Lost” should get some points for furthering the stereotype that ALL Asians know karate. I thought this was a good episode. Since eye-patch guy came back does that mean that the island has sweet powers of bringing people back to life?
Andre: My thinking on the Juliet situation is that I’ll continue to deduct points as long as she’s working with Ben. If she decides to side with the Losties when it’s all said and done, she can expect a decent “payback” in points for abandoning the Dark Side.
Pea: Believe it or not, Jack is one of my favorite characters (I really like Matthew Fox’s performance in the role). Here’s hoping he’ll do something awesomely awesome in the finale and redeem himself. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
Lucas: Yep, first Jin finds a ping pong table in the jungle, then he’s doing kung-fu on Mikhail. We’re on to you, Lost writers. If Jin discovers a secret DHARMA Mathematics Station next week, I’m finished watching on general principle.
Moral of the episode: Never trust a dead Russian.
Until a few episodes back, I just found Jack sort of annoying. These days, I loaaathe me some Jack. Jack is firmly in Michael territory. I applaud his sink in the ratings.
How did Kate lose 4 points this week?
Megan: Oops! That was a cut-and-paste holdover from last week. Her score was correct; I just needed to delete the (-4) after it.
Apparently what Namoi said to Mikhail in Russian was “I’m not the only one.” Hmmm….Interesting! I think she’s an other. And it’s all a big trick!
