Lost-vivor: “Left Behind”

Lost-vivor

Welcome to Week Fifteen of Lost-vivor — all the mystery and adventure of Lost with an added dash of Survivor-style competition. Here’s the deal: after each week’s Lost, I’ll award and deduct points from the characters based on their actions during the episode. I’ll tally up the Lost-vivor scores as the season progresses, and, at the end, we’ll declare a Lost Season Three champion! You can catch up on the action so far at the Lost-vivor archives.

Please note that the section ahead contains spoilers for last night’s episode of Lost. Proceed at your own risk.

After last week’s surprisingly strong Nikki/Paulo episode, I thought “Left Behind” was a bit of a letdown. The flashback was disappointing in that it didn’t really provide us with any new insight into Kate as a character (although we did find out there’s a Sawyer Jr. out there somewhere [Ed. note: Oops. I guess we've known about Clementine since "Every Man for Himself." My bad]). As for Kate’s adventures in the present day, it was fun seeing the Monster again, but I didn’t find the tension between Juliet and Kate all that compelling. Then again, maybe I’m biased. Kate is one of my least favorite Lost characters, after all.

Sawyer and Hurley’s B-story, on the other hand, was far more entertaining. I immediately suspected Hurley was conning Sawyer, but it was fun seeing it play out nevertheless. After a slow start, the writers have really done a nice job with Hurley in recent weeks. Even though he dubbed Sawyer the tribe’s new leader in last night’s episode, I like how Hurley has evolved into a leadership role of his own this season — holding together the fragile society they’ve formed on the island.

Before I get to this week’s scores, I should note that I’ve added Juliet to the pool of Lost-vivor competitors this week. For now, I’ll assume that she really has joined the good guys after being abandoned by the Others (although I suspect she’s still in league with Ben). Rather than retroactively score the entire season, I’m starting her off at a base score of 100 this week and moving on from there.

That being said, let’s take a look at the scores!

Kate:

  • Received a serious beat-down courtesy of Juliet: -2
  • Also received one of Juliet’s signature sandwiches. Yummy: +1
  • Got Sawyer’s ex-girlfriend off the hook, stopped yokels from calling to cops: +2
  • What’s that smell? Knockout gas? What’s…going…on? *thud*: -3
  • Admitted to a total stranger she’s known less than an hour that she murdered her stepfather. Gee, I wonder how the Feds ever managed to catch Kate: -4
  • Pickpocketed Juliet’s knife: +1
  • Used her mad jungle tracking skillz to find her way back to Otherville: +2
  • Won her rematch against Juliet, dislocating Juliet’s shoulder in the process: +3
  • Survived an encounter with the Smoke Monster: +3
  • Fell in mud. First a catfight in the rain, and now Kate and Juliet are going to mud wrestle?: -1
  • Turned away by her mother…again: -2
  • Bad news, Kate. Jack totally likes Juliet more than he likes you: -3
  •
    Net gain/loss: -3
    Current score: 131

    Kate

    Charlie:

  • Spoiled Hurley’s fun by tipping off Sawyer about the nonexistent banishment vote: -1
  •
    Net gain/loss: -1
    Current score: 99

    Hurley:

  • Last week, he was solving murders. This week, he’s guiding Sawyer down the path to redemption. What’s gotten into Hurley lately?: +10
  •
    Net gain/loss: +10
    Current score: 136

    Locke:

  • Apparently drank the Kool-Aid, joined up with the Others: -6
  • Dude, did you have to act like such a condescending ass about Kate’s past?: -3
  •
    Net gain/loss: -9
    Current score: 67

    Desmond:

  • “I shot a wild boar, brotha”: +3
  •
    Net gain/loss: +3
    Current score: 157

    Sawyer:

  • About to get voted off the island. I guess I’m not the only person to make the Lost/Survivor connection: -2
  • Caught a fish: +2
  • Ended up smelling like fish guts. Then again, Jin probably smells like that all the time and nobody gives him a hard time about it: -3
  • Made Aaron cry. Do you have any idea how long it will take Charlie to get the baby settled back down?: -1
  • Roasted Desmond’s boar, threw the First Annual Mysterious Island Luau: +4
  • Conned by Hurley into running around making nice with the entire camp. Seriously, Sawyer — everybody saw that coming: -8
  • Promoted to leadership position by Hurley. Can Hurley do that?: +5
  • Unfortunately, it looks like Sawyer only gets to be leader until Jack returns next week: -4
  • Still can’t get a smile from Sun: -1
  •
    Net gain/loss: -8
    Current score: 150

    Sawyer

    Claire:

  • Received a lovely blanket from Sawyer: +1
  •
    Net gain/loss: +1
    Current score: 106

    Claire

    Sayid:

  • Once again proved himself the most capable Lost-vivor, sweeping the camp for weapons and clues to the Others’ whereabouts mere moments after being rescued: +3
  • Doesn’t trust Juliet. Me either, Sayid. Me either: +1
  •
    Net gain/loss: +4
    Current score: 127

    Sayid

    Juliet:

  • Beat the ever-loving snot out of Kate. Apparently, it takes more than a cue stick to get the drop on Juliet: +2
  • Banished from Otherville: -5
  • Correctly predicted it was going to rain. She’s like the female version of Desmond, brotha: +1
  • Dislocated her shoulder during her second catfight with Kate: -4
  • Survived an encounter with the Smoke Monster: +3
  • Demonstrated her mastery of Jack Shephard-related trivia: +1
  • Fell down in the jungle, got that one outfit she owns all muddy: -1
  • Had a key to the handcuffs all along, conned Kate to gain her trust: +4
  • Scared away the Smoke Monster with Sonic Pylons o’ Death: +5
  •
    Net gain/loss: +6
    Current score: 106

    Juliet

    Jack:

  • Trusted Juliet. I have a feeling this is going to come back to haunt Jack. If it turns out she’s on the level, though, I’ll gladly refund these points at a later date: -2
  •
    Net gain/loss: -2
    Current score: 85

Can it be? After jumping into the lead during the first week of Lost-vivor, Sawyer has held the top spot ever since — until now, that is. Falling for Hurley’s con cost Sawyer big points this week and gave hunting enthusiast Desmond a chance to move into the number one spot. Go, Desmond! Meanwhile, Hurley moves past Kate into third place after another strong week. Who saw that coming?

After fifteen weeks of Lost-vivor goodness, here are the latest standings:

    1. Desmond (157) (+3)
    2. Sawyer (150) (-8)
    3. Hurley (136) (+10)
    4. Kate (131) (-3)
    5. Sayid (127) (+3)
    6. Jin (124)
    7. Sun (113)
    8. Vincent (109)
    9. Claire (108) (+1)
    10. Juliet (106) (+6)
    11. Charlie (99) (-1)
    12. Jack (85) (-2)
    13. Locke (67) (-9)

That’s it for this week’s edition of Lost-vivor! Juliet gets her second flashback episode next week in “One of Us.” As a late addition to the Lost-vivor rankings, can she make up for lost time? Meanwhile, will Desmond hold on to the lead, or will Sawyer reclaim the top spot? Will Kate find herself torn between Jack and Sawyer? Will Charlie randomly decide to poison the camp’s water supply? Will Hurley gain telekinetic powers and wig out like Sissy Spacek in Carrie? Tune in next week for the answer to these and many other questions.

Juliet is playing them all! Jack should NOT trust her, everwhere we go Juliet is conning the losties, they should leave her behind at othersville, but since Juliet conned Jack so well she knows he won’t do that.

      -down with juliet-

Yikes, when I was watching I just knew Sawyer was going to take a big hit in points. Deservingly so though, what’s that expression? “You can’t con a con man?” Well, I guess the rotund Sir Hugo can. And it looks like it will be hard for Sawyer to race back to the top of the standings seeing that he still has 3 days and 10 hours before he can start bestowing more nicknames which will equate to about 3-4 more episodes. I wonder if when his “time-out” expires if he’ll just start running around camp like a mad man giving out nicknames.

I so think that Juliet is playing them though. I mean why would she have the key to the handcuffs? The “Others” had to give her the key. Its not like she carried Kate all that way into the jungle. It looks like they walked quite a bit to get back to the houses. Also, she knew the “Sonic Pylons o’ Death” were off? How so? Ben is setting something up. The biggest tell, Sayid doesn’t trust her. During the next island election, I’m voting Sayid as “leader.”

A couple questions though. Why did Sawyer act like he’s never held Aaron though or didn’t know his name. Didn’t he spend a whole episode holding Aaron and reading to him because his voice was so soothing and the only thing that didn’t make the baby cry. Why wouldn’t Claire think that was a nice thing you did for her Sawyer? CONNED!

Also, what kind of gas was Jack given? It was at least a day before Kate and Juliet got back to the houses and he was still knocked out? What a wuss.

Also, do you think that they move camp into the houses now? I most certainly would. In fact, if I was Jack, I’d be like “you go get the rest of the gang and I’ll be hearing chilling in the barcalounger eating leftover chicken.” I would have gave him bucu points for that!

We’ve known for some time that Sawyer has a “junior” out there - Clementine, he sent her a bunch of money when he was inside jail working for the warden conning that other guy.

Yeah, I saw Hurley’s “con” coming a mile away too.

So I still don’t understand why Kate and Juliet were dumped in the jungle - and why Sayid/Jack were left there. Why was Jack (and presumably Sayid) unconscious for a whole day while Kate/Juliet woke up that morning? Did Juliet admit say that she had hand-cuffed herself to Kate and drug her out there? Or was it just an excuse for Kate/Julie to have catfights, mud wrestle and get drenched and sweaty together (not to mention two girls having to work together to align with Kate’s flashback)? Smells like poor writing to me…

Next week will be a make-or-break for me: If Jack/Kate/Sayid do not insist that all the survivors pack up the beach and move in to the now-abandoned Otherville, I’ll know the writing has jumped the shark on the show. Lessee, we got houses, electricity, running water, and - oh yeah, a SONIC FENCE TO KEEP OUT THE SMOKE MONSTERS, POLAR BEARS AND OTHERS SHOULD THEY COME BACK!

John Locke should have lost more than 6 points this week….he is becoming a real jerk! I think he should be the next LOSTIE to kick the bucket! His conversation with Kate was very telling of his personality.

With regard to Sawyer…that was awesome! Go Hurley, even though Sawyer is one of my favorite characters! I loved the comment from Sawyer about the baby…”he is not a wrinkley as he use to be” Haha! What a guy!

I think this was one of my favorite episodes thus far!

    5. Jess April 5, 2007 8:01 am

Crazybro: Nope, I don’t trust Juliet either. I’ll be genuinely surprised if she doesn’t turn on the Losties by the season finale.

Adam: When the ‘08 Mysterious Island election rolls around, I’m totally casting my vote for Sayid as Leader. Under the Jack administration, they’ve had multiple deaths (Boone, Shannon, Arzt, Ana Lucia, Libby, Paulo, and Nikki), they’ve gone to war with the Others, they’ve lost a boat and a submarine, and they’ve yet to address the “Claire problem.” It’s time for new leadership, and I think Sayid is the right man for the job. I just wonder if the residents of the Mysterious Island are ready to elect an Iraqi to office.

Jeff: I can’t believe I forgot about Clementine. That’s what I get for writing these recaps in the middle of the night. ;) Meanwhile, I was thinking the same thing about leaving Otherville. I’d say “sayonara” to the beach and relocate to the Others’ old digs. And I wouldn’t leave Rousseau my forwarding address either.

Jeanie: I was just looking back at my notes from the episode, and I actually forgot a scoring item for Locke. I’ve fixed it now, and he’s lost a few more points as a result.

    6. Datadog April 5, 2007 8:48 am

Wait… negative points for chick mud wrestling?

    7. Jess April 5, 2007 8:50 am

Datadog: It’s more like negative points for getting totally covered in mud. The mud wrestling was just the first thing that came to mind when I saw it (shocking, I know).

    8. David April 5, 2007 8:58 am

Something is fishy…first Julliet has the freedom to go around making sandwiches for Kate and the next she’s gassed and handcuffed to Kate in the jungle (using handcuffs with an extra-long chain, just in case they need to get in a fight). So, what’s fishy? Julliet’s reason for being in the jungle (”I didn’t want to be left behind again” or is she still in league with Benry et al) or the writing? (kudos to all for catching that Jack & Sayid were knocked out for longer).

Regarding moving to “Otherville”…press 77 anyone? I’d stay on the beach where there are no computers that can trigger massive explosions, thankyouverymuch.

    9. Lucas April 5, 2007 9:55 am

There was a brief moment that I thought Kate was going to drop kick Juliet right into the Sonic Pylons O’ Death after escaping the smoke monster. Does anybody have any idea as to how far up the sonic force field goes? I was thinking that maybe the smoke monster/Ghostwriter could just go up and over. Or is that too simple?

    10. Thom April 5, 2007 11:14 am

For the most part the flashback sucked, but at least we had some awesome girl-on-girl fisticuffs to make up for that. And Hurley’s con rocked - no matter how lame Sawyer tried to make it seem.

Overall I liked this episode because it brought back the smoke monster, and seemed like it might actually force some forward progress - what with Sayid wanting to go all “My name is Sayid, and I am a torturer” on Juliet’s ass.

    11. Ruko April 5, 2007 11:36 am

My favorite part is that when Desmond has something happen he’s allowed to declare it to a masculine sibling in the first person.

Also, Juliet calling the rain is much more reminiscent of Locke doing the same with Boone in season one than anything Desmond has done.

Lastly, Locke’s point total is getting pretty ridiculous. I know a lot of people don’t agree with his actions, but at the very least he serves as an agent that moves the story along and that should count for something positive on a show where a common complaint is that things develop too slowly.

    12. mon April 5, 2007 11:43 am

I thought this was an awesome episode. I can’t wait to see what happens when the others come back! And what the hell was the smoke monster doing….taking pictures?

    13. SD April 5, 2007 12:18 pm

I think Kate should get negative points for being rejected by Jack. The woman’s bawling her eyes out apologizing to the man and the first thing he says is “Where’s Juliet”. He didn’t even acknowledge the apology. That’s cold.

    14. Dawn-Michelle April 5, 2007 8:04 pm

I think it’s most interesting the place in line Kate took on the way back to the beach after meeting up with Sayid and Jack. Usually, she’s first in line or just behind the leader–she likes to be up front, esp. with Jack. This time Jack and Juliet led the way, and Kate stayed behind with Sayid. I think that’s indicitive of her new place in the hierarchy. She needs to fight for her role or she will fade away.

    15. Aptiva Dave April 5, 2007 9:44 pm

During the whole Kate/Juliet handcuffed scenes, all I could think about was how it all reminded me of the movie Fled with Lawrence Fishburne and Stephen Badwin.

    16. Veronica April 6, 2007 1:45 pm

I got deep personal satisfaction out of Kate telling Juliet off–the whole “Welcome to not knowing what the hell is going on,” thing.
