Apropos of Something’s Public Enemy #1: Sporty Spice

Posted on February 28, 2007 @ 1:07 pm

Spice GirlsI’m officially declaring a new public enemy number one for my blog. Just read this recent news item:

Spice Girl Mel C Holds Up Reunion

Melanie Chisholm is scuppering plans for a Spice Girls reunion because she thinks her solo career is more important.

Simon Fuller, who founded the five-piece in 1994, claims Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, Mel B and Emma Bunton are keen to reunite — but Mel C is refusing. He says, “Mel C thinks her solo career is bigger than the band, which is just not the case. She needs to wise up and realize a reunion would be amazing for everybody concerned.”

You’d have to reunite the zombified corpses of John and George with Ringo and Paul for a three-night stint in Madison Square Garden to have a bigger musical reunion than the Spice Girls! And Mel C (the erstwhile Sporty Spice) is holding it up? In the interest of her solo career? You’ve gotta be kidding me.

Shame on you, Mel C. All I really want — all any of us really, really want — is a zig-a-zig-ah. And you’d deny us that? You’re officially Apropos of Something’s new public enemy number one, Sporty. I hope you can live with yourself.

Noooo!!! How could she?! She was my second favorite!

Of course, one person’s public enemy is another’s miraculous aversion of disaster.

Datadog: See, that’s why her betrayal cuts so deep for me. Sporty was my favorite. I even wore a sporty Adias t-shirt when I saw them in concert back in 1998 as a sign of my devotion. Et tu, Sporty? Et tu?

    MC: Fair enough. ;)

I always knew there was something wrong with that one.

I am so glad to finally see someone who isn’t afraid to address the truly important issues of our day!

Funny.. i would have thought Posh would be the sticky wicket, what with having the smoking hot hubby and all….

    MC’s comment was classic.

One question before I commit either way: What is scuppering?

Uh, solo career? Really? Who knew…

Anyways, she’d best get over it. The only way anyone’s going to be giving her a second thought is if she goes with it. I miss Ginger Spice…

lmao! are you really comparing the Spice Girls to the Beatles? surely, that’s a giant typo. ;)

LOL. Solo career. Maybe she’s doing better over there than over here because I havent heard ANYTHING from her since they broke up oh so many centuries ago. I read somewhere that Posh Spice was surprised she even got in the group because she sang off key during her audition. She tried a solo album, too,and it tanked.

Dawn: Actually, I was talking about John Hartman, George Glickstein, Paul Diaz, and Ringo Unterholzner of the now-defunct band “John Hartman and the Wailing Curtain Rods.” You thought I was talking about the Beatles? ;)

Celise: Something tells me Posh wasn’t the only one who sang off-key at those auditions.

    Shameful, Jess.

What does kts think about this development?

I know you’re joking and all, but please be careful. If Mel C does take a break from polishing her Grammys and reads this, she might change her mind. And really, that wouldn’t be good for anyone. And I’m afraid we would have to hold you responsible.

People are redicilous…Melanie C is proud to have been in the Spice Girls, and she’s been saying that for years and people know that. She’s just fulfilled and happy being a solo artist because that’s what she dreamed about since she was a little girl…People need to put themselves in Melanie C’s shoes for a minute and think about how much she suffered while the Spice Girls were together. She came out a while ago in a radio interview and said one the main reasons she didn’t want to do a reunion is because of the fact that she didn’t want to go back because of how hard things were on them back; being away from home, suffering from eating disorders etc…Also think about how badly Spice ended if you really think about it carefully: Geri left in May 1998 leaving the other four girls to finish the rest of the world tour by themselves, then what was left of the group released their single Goodbye at the end of 1998, did some performances in 1999, and then in 2000 the girls released Holler/ Let Love Lead The Way and their album Forever, did some promotion for the album, said they were gonna do a tour in 2001 one more than one occassion to promote the album, and suddenly poof they were gone without a word. They left the fans hanging really. But if you think about the fans left the Spice Girls hanging a little over two years after Geri left when they released Forever, which only sold around 2 million copies worldwide and that’s pitiful, and to me that’s a sad way to end something so AMAZING!! People should blaming Melanie C for something so dumb, the reunion is happening, so people should stop complaining about who was “holding up” the reunion. They all had their fears and doubts about the reunion, even if some of them have always been up for doing a reunion at any time, it doesn’t mean they can’t be a bit nervous about it, they’d be crazy not to be. You have to realize that not all of them suffered physically when they were together, but I’m sure that it effected the group as a whole just because they are really good friends. But I know there are many other reasons why the girls were hesitant to come back, and reasons that I haven’t mentioned. But it’s not that hard to figure out those other contributing factors. Even if Melanie C would have been the reason for the Spice Girls not getting back together, who cares I’m one of the biggest Melanie C fans out there, and I think she’s having an amazing solo career. Despite that I’m also a huge fan of the Spice Girls; I love and respect those girls for what they had to go through to do what they have done for this world, but I’m actually surprised they are back to be honest with you.

Ummm Simon Fueller didn’t found the Spice Girls. He managed them after they bursted into his office. It was Chris Herbert that formed the group line-up. The girls were originally called Touch and they changed their name to Spice.

melanie c was depressed and anorexic when she was with the spice girls. she just felt horrible being stereotyped and judged against the other girls. it’s understandable why she would wanna focus on her solo career. it’s more important to her and it should be.
