I want a new drug
Posted on November 30, 2006 @ 1:40 pm
I’m now two weeks into a nasty, hacking cough that, despite my best efforts, just won’t go away. In addition to coughing my head off all day long, I can’t sleep when the evening rolls around. So, I’ve turned to cough suppressants just to make it through the night.
I started out with NyQuil, but I kept having an awful phantasmagorical dream of falling down a bottomless pit after taking it. It was the kind where you feel like you’re still falling when you wake up, and you do that weird full-body jerk in bed. Man, I hate that.
Then I moved on to a prescription cough syrup with codeine. The falling sensation was gone, but it was replaced by the distinct impression that a zombie was standing beside my bed and poking me with his rotting finger every time I closed my eyes. Not an improvement, per se.
Last night, I combined a little Benadryl with my codeine and inexplicably dreamt that I was working as a lab assistant to 18th-century French chemist Antoine Lavoisier as he devised the metric system. I have no idea what corner of my brain Monsieur Lavoisier was tucked away in, but I suppose it’s better than the falling or the touchy-feely zombie.
I think I’ll stick with the Benadryl/codeine cocktail.

OH MAN I’m glad I’m not the only one who can’t take Nyquil. It makes me hallucinate and toss and turn…not very restful at all, to say the least.
Codeine does absolutely zilch, but Benadryl knocks the wind right outta me, so that’s what I stick with!
NyQuil keeps my bride up all night. Instead of putting her in a haze, it keeps her up while she feels funky. Medicine seems like a strong word for the stuff.
Did you really have that dream? Because that’s freakin’ hilarious. I’ve had some odd dreams myself (I’ve dreamt about every U.S. President since Nixon, except for Carter), but I don’t think they were caused by medication.
Believe it or not, I really had that dream. I had to look Lavoisier up on Wikipedia when I woke up to find out if he really helped develop the metric system. Apparently, Subconscious Jess is significantly more intelligent than Conscious Jess.
Have you tried Mucinex? I’ve had the same creeping crud thing going. (cold that moves down to the chest) and it seemed to really help.
That’s amazing. I’ve actually had my subconscious play jokes on me (like make puns, for example) that I didn’t get until I was awake. I recently posted a blog about a dream that I had that was a commercial for a nonexistent sitcom called The Howard Hesseman Show. Some day I’ll post the dream I had about Jimmy Walker from Good Times.
Yeah, you dream of 18th century French Chemists, and I get stuck with 70s sitcom characters.
I usually do three shots of Gran Patron and two Benadryl to put me to sleep when I’m having coughing fits.
Another Canadian advantage: Over the counter codeine.
HAHA! It’s so funny that you posted what you did. I have the exact same effects that you do with those drugs.
For some reason when I was on codeine (and the other pain killer that starts with a “V”…i don’t remember what its name is) I have that terrible dream where I’m filling up my car at a gas station and then all the gas pump hoses turn into poisonous snakes and start surrounding me and get ready to bite. Either that or vampires try to bite me.
When I’m on Nyquil (which leads me to where I am now - 1:15 in the morning surfing the web with a nasty cold) I am all hopped up and can’t sleep. I took about 2 shots worth of Nyquil and I just get all wired and can’t sleep. I’m a complete idiot since I know it has this effect and I do it anyways. I was just hoping this time I would actually crash.
For some reason, benadril knocks me out too. Look like I’m gonna pop one of those in 6 hours.
Sorry if I rambled.
