I miss Franken Berry

FrankenberryWell, I guess the title says it all really, but I think that perhaps a little more explanation is in order. As I approach 30, well, I’ve become nostalgic for the things I enjoyed as a child, and there is only so much Atari and the A-Team one can stand before seeking out some of the other simpler pleasures of a time long past. In retrospect, it should have been obvious to me what would have been the most evocative of all things for an adult… a smell and taste from my lost youth.

But alas, my most favorite cereal ever is a victim of a little bit of what I feel is corporate malfeasance on the part of General Mills. It disappeared for store shelves many years ago, and so I’ve had to go without the delightfully pink milk and the heavenly aroma of heavily sweetened corn and wheat flour and delightfully sweet crack-like marshmallows.

I’ve always enjoyed strawberry-flavored confections far more than the actual berries themselves, and the crispy-fruiting combination of mallow and cereal always appealed to me far more than anything Count Chocula could offer me, because chocolate cereal is just not my thing… even Fred Flintstone and Reese’s couldn’t get me onto that boat.

Of course, I know that Franken Berry isn’t discontinued, but it is now a specialty cereal that only pops up sporadically or can be ordered from Amazon… if you live in the United States at least, which sadly I do not… so I must go without that sweet sweet taste of berried bliss until General Mills comes to its senses or Amazon realizes that there are other customers who would gladly buy their culinary wares besides those who reside in the lower 48.

Has anyone else had a craving for a food item from their childhood recently?

Matt from Culture Kills… wait, I mean Cutlery

They used to have these Sunkist Fruit Snacks that came in only three flavors: orange, red, and purple. They weren’t anything fancy - just little globs of jelly. Sometimes they even came with a marshmallow or chocolate coating.

I can’t find those anymore. It’s all multi-colored crap shaped like Pokemon and stuff.

I remember those too Datadog… they reminded me of a much tasty version of winegums… they were so flavor-filled.

I’ve never heard of those Katie… tell me more about them.

mmm I loved All Berries. I was always a fan of Captain Crunch and I loved the berries in the Crunchberries cerial, but I never ever liked them together. When All Berries came out, I was in Captain Crunch HEAVEN. *sigh* The world taketh away all that hath been good.

And I have absolutely no idea what it was called, but does anyone remember a fairly plain tasting cereal shaped like little animals? Or at least the animals were on the box… I don’t remember. I loved that stuff.

Ohhh, I love Boo Berry!!! They sell them both at this store called Marc’s in Ohio. Almost always have them in stock. Lucky me!

Oh man…memories. When I was growing up (in the 1970s), many is the time I’d be sitting in my living room, in front of the 25 inch color tv (my young life sucked and watching syndicated reruns of classic tv shows gave me plenty of joy that I desperately needed) with a bowl of cereal. Particularly Franken Berry. My favorite.

Geez…I had no idea that Frankenberry would be so difficult to find! I stopped at two stores on the way home from work today and couldn’t find a Monster cereal anywhere…
…the one I really miss is Fruit Brute. Bring back the brute!!!

I miss Frankenberry too, I like him more than “The Count”. I was looking for him on the web and found this site. I never had any of the cereals as a kid, because they were too sweet. However, for some reason I still remember the commercials and love the cartoon characters.

I am 41 and grow up in the 70’s. I say bring back Frankenberry!!!
    I say bring back Frankenberry!!!

I hear everything that you are saying… except I don’t only crave Franken Berry I crave the delectable styling of Boo Berry!!! If you are ever in Chicago during Halloween time I know they sell both at Target! Even so there is never enough cart space to fulfill my year-long craving.
    Sincerely Yours,
    Me
