Lost-vivor: “Further Instructions”

Lost-vivor

Welcome to Week Three of Lost-vivor — all the mystery and adventure of Lost with an added dash of Survivor-style competition. Here’s the deal: after each week’s Lost, I’ll arbitrarily award and deduct points from the characters based on their actions during the episode. I’ll tally up the Lost-vivor scores as the season progresses, and, at the end, we’ll declare a Lost Season Three champion! You can catch up on the action so far this season here.

After the jump, I’ll share my thoughts on “Further Instructions” and assign points for the week. Please note that the section ahead contains spoilers for last night’s episode of Lost. Proceed at your own risk.

Now, that’s a little more like it. Overall, I thought “Further Instructions” was an outstanding episode, and it’s due in large part to the fact that it featured two of my favorite Lost-vivors: Locke and Charlie. I also loved the episode’s Season One vibe. I’m not just talking about Boone’s cameo or the polar bear, either. Locke finally reconnected with the island and reverted back to his awesome hunter/tracker ways. In turn, it felt like the Losties were actually exploring the island for the first time since Season One.

Now, let’s see if the return of Season One Locke was enough to knock Sawyer from the top spot…

Charlie:
  • Oddly unconcerned about fate of Hatch survivors: -3
  • Beat Locke at charades: +2
  • Insisted on joining Locke for polar bear hunt: -3
  • Risked making bald joke at Locke’s expense: +5
  • Net gain/loss: +1
    Current score: 101

    Claire:
  • Didn’t do anything useful: -3
  • Didn’t cry or get kidnapped: +3
  • Net gain/loss: 0
    Current score: 100

    Desmond:
  • Survived Hatch implosion: +5
  • Albeit naked: -1
  • Forced to wear ill-fitting tie-dye: -1
  • “I can apparently see the future, brotha”: +14
  • Net gain/loss: +17
    Current score: 97

    Eko:
  • Survived Hatch implosion: +5
  • Dragged off by polar bear: -4
  • Net gain/loss: +1
    Current score: 101

    Hurley:
  • Got his canteen knifed by Locke: -1
  • Wisely chose not to join bear hunt: +3
  • Flashed by naked, precognitive Desmond: -1
  • Actually found his way back to camp: +2
  • Net gain/loss: +3
    Current score: 103

    Locke:
  • Survived Hatch implosion: +5
  • Bonked on the head by flying Jesus stick: -1
  • Rendered mute in dramatic television style: -2
  • Built sweat lodge during first commercial break: +3
  • Hypocritically tripped out in front of Charlie: -2
  • Picked up knife, became awesome again: +15
  • Joined weird hippie commune in flashback: -6
  • Brought undercover cop to commune: -3
  • Successfully tracked Eko to polar bear cave: +6
  • Roasted bear with makeshift flamethrower: +4
  • Rescued Eko: +5
  • Made rousing speech to camp: +2
  • Net gain/loss: +26
    Current score: 126

Quite a week for the Box Man! Of course, the entire episode was basically a love letter from the writers to John Locke, so it’s no surprise he racked up major points. Assuming Locke leads the expedition to rescue Jack, Sawyer, and Kate sometime in the next few weeks, he’ll likely remain near the top of the Lost-vivor rankings.

Meanwhile, by gaining the ability to see the future, Desmond recouped most of the points he lost last week by having his boat stolen. I was kind of hoping they’d introduce a gimmick where he would remain naked for the rest of the season — just so Lost-vivor could have its very own Richard Hatch.

After three weeks of intense Lost-vivor competition, here are the standings:

    1. Locke (126) (+26)
    2. Sawyer (122)
    3. Jin (110)
    4. Sun (107)
    5. Hurley (103) (+3)
    6. Charlie (101) (+1)
    7. Eko (101) (+1)
    8. Claire (100)
    9. Vincent (100)
    10. Desmond (97) (+17)
    11. Kate (96)
    12. Sayid (94)
    13. Jack (81)

Be sure to tune in next week for more Lost-vivor!

I was happy too, that Locke is back. When Desmond first said he gave that speech, I thought, maybe there were two Lockes. The bad twin thing. Since, he was so different last season. Maybe Hurley had it right, maybe Desmond IS gonna be like the incredible hulk. Sweet. Hopefully next week Jack will gain some points. Poor guy, last place.

Okay I disagreed with Desmond losing so many points for the boat thing, but I’m glad that he seems to have recovered. :D

This was the first episode of the season that didn’t have me questioning my eternal love for J.J. Abrams. YAY LOST!

Mon: I have the distinct feeling things are going to get worse for Jack before they get better.

Fuzzball: If Desmond manifests any other psychic powers in the next couple of episodes, he’ll be back near the top in no time. ;)

I don’t know… I’d give Hurley points for covering Desmond’s nakedness in the first place.

I’d basically give all the beach Lost-aways -5 for being pretty oblivious to Hurley’s return, Jack/Kate/Desomnds’ absense, and not even saying, gee Hurley, where’s Michael? A friend: LostExposed.com.
