Lost-vivor: “A Tale of Two Cities”

Lost-vivor

It’s finally here: Lost-vivor! In a nutshell, Lost-vivor is my attempt to add a little Survivor-style competition to Lost by awarding and deducting points from characters based on their actions during each week’s episode. I’ll tally up the Lost-vivor scores as the season progresses, and at the end, we’ll declare a Lost Season Three champion! See this post for more details.

After the jump, I’ll offer a few thoughts on the season premiere and start assigning points for the week. Please note that the section ahead contains spoilers for last night’s episode of Lost. Proceed at your own risk.

I thought “A Tale of Two Cities” was a solid start for Season Three. Seeing the Others living in their tropical suburbia prior to the crash of Flight 815 was certainly a shocker. I knew the beards and ragged clothes were bogus, but this adds an entirely new layer of mystery concerning their presence on the island. The rest of the episode focused on Jack dealing with his captivity while flashing back to scenes from his divorce. Sawyer and Kate put in appearances as the Others’ other prisoners, but the focus was clearly on Jack and his interaction with mysterious newcomer Juliet.

Speaking of Juliet, is it just me, or does she bear a striking resemblance to Jack’s ex-wife, Sarah? And Desmond’s erstwhile lover, Penny? I’m not saying this in an “OMG, they’re all Dharma clones!!!” way, so much as a “the casting director has a thing for willowy blondes” way.

Anyway, I would have liked to have seen what was going on back at camp or with Sayid, Jin, and Sun on the boat, but I guess we’ll have to wait until next week. In the meantime, let’s start assigning some points! Please note that all Lost-vivors begin the season with a score of 100; points will be added or deducted from that score based on their actions.

Jack:

  • Stalking ex-wife Sarah, crazy style: -8
  • Didn’t get caught stalking Sarah: +1
  • Walked into glass wall in cell like a goob: -2
  • Turned down a grilled chesse sandwich: -5
  • Mental breakdown at Dad’s AA meeting: -3
  • Mounted escape attempt from cell: +10
  • Flooded hatch, punched out by Juliet: -14
  • Net gain/loss: -21
    Current score: 79

    Kate:

  • Showered, got a new dress: +5
  • Handcuffed herself to patio furniture for coffee: -10
  • Net gain/loss: -5
    Current score: 95

    Sawyer:

  • Mentioned by Kate before Jack: +3
  • Shocked by Skinner box/bear cage: -5
  • Bestowed nickname on caged teenager (Chachi): +2
  • Escaped cage: +10
  • Tasered by Juliet and recaptured: -12
  • Solved Skinner box, received reward: +15
  • Ate bear food: -2
  • Net gain/loss: +11
    Current score: 111

In terms of analysis, whenever Jack is on-screen, he’s hemmoraging points. If he’s lucky, maybe he won’t get as much airtime next week. That’s like the Lost-vivor equivalent of winning immunity as far as Jack’s concerned.

So, after one week of Lost-vivor, here are the standings:

    1. Sawyer (111) (+11)
    2. Charlie (100)
    3. Claire (100)
    4. Desmond (100)
    5. Eko (100)
    6. Hurley (100)
    7. Jin (100)
    8. Locke (100)
    9. Sayid (100)
    10. Sun (100)
    11. Vincent (100)
    12. Kate (95) (-5)
    13. Jack (79) (-21)

Tune in next Thursday for Week 2 of Lost-vivor!

I think you should’ve given more points to Sawyer for the nickname. That’s like Sawyer’s supermove. You should define each player’s supermoves and award more points if said move is implemented during an episode. To me, Sawyer calling the other-guy prisoner “Chachi” should’ve meant +25.

Here’s my personal list of Lost-Vivor player supermoves (which you are free to use):
      Sawyer: Creative Nicknames
      Sayid: Torturing people (or animals)
      Desmond: Saying “Brotha”
Eko: Striking someone with the Jesus Stick
Hurley: Referring to a female as a “Dude”
      Charlie: Interacting with Heroin
      Claire: Screaming
      Jin: Speaking in English
      Locke: Displaying Unique, Survivor-Man Qualities
      Sun: Agriculture
Vincent: Showing up at key moments
      Kate: Kissing someone
      Jack: Utilizing Doctor Abilities

To keep it fair, supermoves should be limited to 10 per season; It wouldn’t be right if an episode features Charlie shooting skag every 5 minutes…which is entirely possible. ;)

I think you’re doing a dang good thing here. Fully support it.

It was really cute when sawyer got excited about his reward. I can see now that Jack will end up losing. Too bad, he’s my favorite hottie!

This is great! Suggestion: how about a “Lost-vivor” category in the sidebar?
