Wal-Mart on Karl Marx Street

This photo, taken in Berlin, Germany, may be the funniest thing I’ve seen all day. Via Phillyist (photo by Flickr user L’Hibou).

We shopped at Wal-Mart regularly in Jena, Germany. I was quite surprised it existed there and yes, they generally suck just as much over there, but they did have a larger selection of American foods than the other stores.

Here’s the only photo we have readily available from our former German Wal-Mart.

I guess Marx won that fight. Kinda. Well, not Marx. But Walmart lost for sure.

They are pulling out of the German market. Metro bought their property.

Reason? They couldn’t kill their competitors with aggressive price fights. The customers didn’t buy into their marketing concepts. Both the German employees and the German customers are used to different standards and didn’t enjoy the way Walmart treated them

For example Walmart tried to forbid flirting at work, like they did previously in the USA. Well, sorry. That got them very, very bad publicity and a court order that restricted the new “work codex”.

Subsequently the number of customers went down drastically and the already heavily indepted concern had to call it quits.
