100 Facts in 100 Days: Fact 32

32. I’m a little anal retentive when it comes to the condition of my books. I suspect it’s a holdover from collecting comic books when I was younger, but I just can’t stand the thought of highlighting or scribbling in the margin of anything I read. I’m also nitpicky when it comes to creasing spines and dog-earing pages.

Dude, people make fun of me because I am freaky like that too. (I used to work at a couple of used bookstores, so I got it from that).

I’m so anal about the condition of my books that people don’t even like to borrow books from me. Which is actually okay with me. :-) However, I do own some books that I’ve bought in secondhand bookstores that have seen way better days and this fact surprises people immensely. They can’t understand why I’d let something that’s been dog-eared, written on and abused share the same space as my own very pristine books. I don’t know. Can’t really explain it I guess except that they tend to be older prints and I like to believe that they were well read and enjoyed.

I hate creased spines. If I’m in a used book store and I find a book I’ve been looking for, I will pass right by it if it has a creased spine. Of course, if it’s really hard to come by I’ll make an exception.

Dogearing doesn’t bother me as much, though. My copy of Paradise Lost is dogeared to hell (haha). And I will only write in a book if it’s a textbook. Then I need to.
