Beverage round-up

blak.jpgWherein I drink potentially nasty soft drinks so you don’t have to…

Coca-Cola Blāk (Quaff-o-Meter Score: 82/100)
Personally, I really dig the whole coffee/Coke combo. Double the caffeine is nice for a kickstart in the morning, too. That being said, I’ve convinced several friends and family members to try it and roughly half said they’d never drink it again in a million years. Bah! What do they know? I do have two minor issues with Coca-Cola Blāk, however. First, my local grocery store charges $7.50 for a four-pack. That seems a little steep. Secondly, Coke’s website and press releases always render Blāk with a line over the ‘a’. Doesn’t that long ‘a’ sound mean we’re supposed to be pronouncing it Coca-Cola Blake? I find this deeply troubling.

Pibb Zero (Quaff-o-Meter Score: 90/100)
Ah, my dear friend Mr. PiBB. You’re like Dr Pepper if Dr Pepper dropped out halfway through his Ph.D. program. Why, oh why did they rename you Pibb Xtra? Must all beverages be x-treme these days? Is there no room for a mild-mannered Mister in my grocer’s soft drink aisle? Anyway, this is the sugar-free version of Pibb Xtra. Very good stuff, definitely tastes less like a diet drink than Diet Dr Pepper (another favorite). Coke is supposedly only rolling this one out in certain states, but it’s worth trying if you can find it.

Diet Dr Pepper Berries & Cream (Quaff-o-Meter Score: -4/100)
Avoid this drink at all costs, live a good life, and pray you don’t end up in Hell where I suspect this vile liquid will be served with every meal. Diet Dr Pepper Berries & Cream is like drinking carbonated cough syrup with about six tablespoons of aspertame mixed in for good measure. Seriously, this stuff is the kind of grotty where you take a sip, nearly spit it out, and then take another drink because it couldn’t possibly taste that bad. Guess what? It did. You just got punk’d by Diet Dr Pepper Berries & Cream.

I don’t like regular Dr. Pepper to begin with [yes, yes, I know, I'm a heathen], so when I heard about this Dr. Pepper Berries & Cream I could only imagine that it was the foulest stuff on earth. Seriously, Dr. Pepper combined with the should-never-be-a-soda-flavor of berries and cream? Ugh. You are so unbelieveably brave.

okay, with the Coke Blak… I tried it a while back. My grocery store was selling them at a DEEP discount — four packs for $1.99. So I bought 4 four packs. Dude. The first two were pretty good. By number 8 (spread out over about a week), I was HATING them. Some tastes grow on you? This taste grows away from you. For real. Grosser over time. Let me know what you think as you drink the rest of the four pack. (Or have you already finished them?)

Well, all of my diet beverages MUST be made Splenda these days. No more of that nasty Aspartame.

I’ve been combining Coke and my leftover morning coffee into an ice-filled glass at lunch for years.

I’m just waiting for Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper and A&W Root Beer to be made with Splenda and my life will be complete.

Ever read Max Barry’s book Syrup? I think you might enjoy it, if you haven’t.

Thanks for the recomendation. I’ll have to ensure that we get fresh Dr.Pepper Berries & Creame delivered on a daily basis.

The line over the ‘a’ is the Coca-Cola wave — a curved line. So the sound would be more like blahk, not blake. Not so deeply troubling, I hope.

Coca-Cola Blãk is awesome, but I am waiting for the diet version. I know the regular version does contain Sucralose (Splenda®), but it also contains high fructose corn syrup.

I haven’t seen Pibb Zero here, but hopefully it’ll come to the most populous state in the near future.

All Dr Pepper versions besides the regular, diet, and pure cane sugar classic version shouldn’t be sold. They all suck.

I have to confess to actually not minding the berries and creme. I haven’t had gallons of it though. As for Blak, it has corn syrup, so its not even on my radar until it is available with some other sugar or synthetic sweetener I can have.

Oh wow a blog after my own heart. Blak was nasty though… I cant drink anything with fake sugar in it so I don’t even try it.

I loved the mild manner Mister PiBB… why did they have to make him sounds like a crappy Fear Factor drink?

$7.50 for four? No. Not cool.

But you know, I do like that packaging.

weird, the second Berries and Cream post I have seen in two days. I tried it when it first came out… and while I am not so far I’d give it a -4… It was pretty gross. maybe a 15/100, only for the fizz factor. That and the fact that it’s part of the esteemed Dr Pepper family, albeit maybe the “cosmotologist”.

Also, I can’t believe any of us tried it in the first place. Just the name makes me think of those packages of instant oats, “peaches and creme”, “straberries and creme”, etc.. but I could at least stomach those.

Anyway, Diet Cheerwine is the only way to go.

Personally I’m surprised Coca Cola Blak even made it on the market.

It just seems like such a joke, and so un PC. Not that I’m concerned with being PC, I’m just saying.

    A belated welcome back btw!:)

I’ve only tried Coca-Cola blak, and I’d have to say it’s not as gross as it sounds. I was actually surprised by how smooth it was.
