100 Facts in 100 Days: Fact 1

Posted on June 29, 2006 @ 7:33 pm

Inspired by AAYOR, I’ll post (approximately) one fact about myself every day (more or less) for the next one hundred days (or thereabouts). Let the self-indulgent navel-gazing begin!

1. I was born and raised in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia. When I was younger, I had a pretty thick Appalachian accent. I’ve worked to tone it down over the past several years, but you can still hear it creep in from time to time — especially on words with a long ‘i’ sound. For example, “lightning” comes out sounding more like “laht’nun.”

Some people don’t think I have an accent. Others wonder where I’m from because of the way I talk. Either way, it’s only going to get worse when I move to Texas.

I came ‘home’ from living in Texas a couple years (by home I mean Nevada where my parents were living) and had one guy asking me to say, “Ride the white lighting.” He laughed and laughed at me. I wanted to smack him upside the head. However, I figure that being a Yankee, he had no idea what he was doing making fun of Texas like that. Now that I live in Colorado I get some weird looks for saying “y’all,” but it hasn’t left my vocabulary yet :)

I took a voice and articulation class in college and the prof could tell you exactly what part of the country you’re from after listening to you read a few lines.

I didn’t think I had an accent at all. But, he told me that I’d lived in the Midwest — Nebraska or Kansas — when I was young and grew up in Southern California. He was right on target. I was stunned.

The only people he had problems with were those who had lived all over the country, military brats, etc.

  5. [...] There is a meme going around the internets wherein people are revealing 100 things about them in 100 days.  I’m shallow or something because I can hardly think of one thing to tell people about me in one day let alone one hundred.  So, therefore I’ve shortened mine to a managable list.  Today’s nifty thing about Randy that should scare the pooh-pooh out of people is: [...]
