basket case
n.
1. Slang. One that is in a completely hopeless or useless condition.
2. Domestic definition. What my wife wants to transform my bookcases into by replacing most of the actual books with cutesy baskets purchased for five bucks a pop at IKEA: “My wife is making me a penniless basket case by insisting that we turn my bookcases into basket cases.”

You could put the books in the baskets.
I have a similar problem wherein my wife wants to put slightly fewer books on the shelf and turn the books on the end on their side and place a picture frame on them. It is a reduction in efficiency to say the least
As a biblioholic, I am APPALLED. The baskets are purely ornamental; the books are TREASURES.
If there was any justice, the baskets would be rendered down to pulp to print NEW books.
But this is within the context of a marriage. The books are doomed.

Unless, of course, your fire discovers Longaberger Baskets. They you will be totally screwed.
