Life, the Universe, and Everything

As a devoted fan of the novel, I just assumed Disney would screw up the film adaptation of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Nevertheless, I couldn’t resist any longer; the K-Girl and I went to see it this afternoon. The verdict? Wow. Very wow. To say the film exceeded my expectations is an understatement; it completely blew them out of the water.
Considering the novel is somewhat short on plot, the movie does an admirable job tying together all the loose bits into something resembling a coherent story. I didn’t initially like the idea of a Arthur/Trillian love story, but it works rather well in the film. As expected, Alan Rickman rocks the house as the voice of Marvin, and Sam Rockwell is ridiculously fantastic as Zaphod. Even the special effects fit the spirit of the source material, eschewing CGI for midgets in robot suits and Muppets.
The movie is far from perfect, but it’s still much better than I anticipated. Two hitchhiking thumbs up!
And, without further ado, my top five movies of 2005 (to date):
- The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
- . . .
- . . .
- . . .
- Fever Pitch
Okay — I’ve only seen two movies in the theater this year. And one of them was Fever Pitch. Blame Netflix and World of Warcraft.

i thought it was a little bland. i mean kudos for a near perfect book to screen adaptation with minimal artistic license, but the arthur/trillian crap needed to be cut down, and the timing was way poor in many cases.
i smiled through the whole movie, but i only laughed once or twice.
Five movies guaranteed to not make it on my top five movies list for 2005:
1: XXX: State of the Union
Okay, that’s only one, but I just saw it and it’s the only thing sticking in my brain. Yeah, stuff blows up. Yeah, Ice Cube is a bad mother (shut your mouth). But when it was over, I was all, like, “meh”.
Oh World of Warcraft has got you, too, now, has it.
: D
WoW?!! Traitor!!!
I would like to open the floor to a more serious topic, one that is worthy of this venerable venue. What did you guys think of Zaphod’s “underhead”?
I think it added some physical humor, but was too weird. How did they take it ransom if it was lodged between Zaph’s chest and chin?
Very nice review. I’ll probably have to go see it now. And I know what you mean about Netflix. Nice site.
I can’t wait to see it! Ohhh, to hear Rickman’s voice….
Saw the movie last night. Fantastic.
I suppose it says something about my level of pop culture submersion, but I wasn’t familiar with Mos Def (who played the role of Ford Prefect). In fact, I thought he was Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko of ST:DS9). The resemblance is uncanny.
