Scroll-wheel resistance

Posted on March 31, 2005

Assume for a moment that you work at Best Buy. One afternoon, you come across a customer testing all the computer mice on display. When you ask if he needs any help, he assures you that he’s just “comparing the scroll-wheel resistance.” Would you think that customer was insane?

Because I’m pretty sure the guy at Best Buy thought I was insane.

Quote of the Whenever: Canned Meat Edition

Posted on March 30, 2005

“I’m torn between my love for Vienna Sausages and my love for state services.”

– lobbyist Lauren Moughon, in response to a
proposed Washington state tax on canned meats

Feel free to play along at home and fill in the blanks! “I’m torn between my love for ______________ and my love for ______________.” Personally, I’m torn between my love for Doritos and my love for non-orange fingertips.

I lectured for almost three hours one time…

Posted on March 30, 2005

Zimbabwean political scientist delivers world’s longest lecture, clocking in at 88 hours and 4 seconds. From the article: “Errol Muzawazi was talking to himself for the majority of it after his audience fell asleep.” I can relate.

Doing my part to support an underappreciated artist

Posted on March 29, 2005

Apropos of Something’s 2004 Album of the Year, Nellie McKay’s Get Away From Me, is being re-released today in a special “dual disc” edition featuring the original album with added DVD content. Reviewers have described Nellie as “Doris Day meets Eminem,” but I prefer to think of her as a slightly less insane Fiona Apple or an angry Norah Jones with a wicked sense of humor.

X-meets-Y comparisons aside, Get Away From Me is a terrific album that combines jazzy piano riffs with remarkably witty lyrics — occasionally throwing Latin grooves, disco pop, and rap into the mix for good measure. I can’t think of many albums that have spent nearly as much time in my CD player through the years as Get Away From Me. So, give it a try if you’re looking for truly unique.

An open letter to the Jelly Belly Candy Company

Posted on March 26, 2005

Dear Jelly Belly,

What’s the deal with your “Buttered Popcorn” jelly beans? Seriously, I’d rather eat an entire bag of disgusting licorice jelly beans than accidentally consume even one of these buttery-sweet monstrosities. Please remove them from your flavor line-up posthaste.

Thanks for your time and consideration in this matter.

Sincerely,

Jess

Random Ten Movie Quotes Game

Posted on March 25, 2005

This week, instead of having you guess song lyrics for my Friday random ten, I’ve picked ten movies from my DVD collection and chosen a quote from each. I’ll strike each line out after it’s been identified correctly.

1. “Jefe, would you say I have a plethora of piñatas?”

2. “Oh, what’s really going to bake your noodle later on is, would you still have broken it if I hadn’t said anything?”

3. “You’ve managed to kill just about everyone else, but like a poor marksman, you keep missing the target.”

4. “Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here! This is the War Room.”

5. “You have my Punisher War Journal #6, my copy of Fletch, and the remote control to my TV. Now, I know it’s going to be hard to give this stuff up because of its sentimental attachment…”

6. “Moisture is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of beauty.”

7. “…when suddenly an unconscious Argentinean fell through my ceiling. He was then joined by a dwarf dressed as a nun.”

8. “You can’t buy a bag of peanuts in this town without someone writing a song about you.”

9. “Well, everyone knows Custer died at Little Bighorn. What this book presupposes is… maybe he didn’t?”

10. “There are only two things I can’t stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people’s cultures… and the Dutch.”

No Googling the answers, or I’ll sic my bloodthirsty cocker spaniel on you.

I’m totally naming my first son Apropos

Posted on March 25, 2005

Korn frontman Jonathan Davis and pornstar Deven have named their newborn son Pirate. I’m sure little Pirate is already looking forward to his first play date with Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s daughter Apple, Courtney Cox and David Arquette’s daughter Coco, and Jason Lee’s son Pilot Inspektor.

Save me the trouble of making excuses for myself

Posted on March 24, 2005

There’s nothing less interesting to read on a blog than the standard “I’ve been really busy lately and haven’t had a chance to post” entry. That being said, help me come up with a more exciting — if not entirely true — explanation for the recent lack of activity here at Ye Olde Apropos of Something. Who knows? If someone comes up with a good enough excuse for the lack of piping hot content, I might even publish it on the main page.

Under the table and dreaming

Posted on March 23, 2005

When I saw that Ben & Jerry’s, a company founded by two self-acknowledged ex-hippies, was marketing a new ice cream flavor called “Dave Matthews Band’s Magic Brownies,” I have to admit that raspberry wasn’t quite the secret ingredient I was expecting.
