Galactic groove

Ananova reports that the European probe scheduled to touch down on Saturn’s moon Titan this Friday is carrying a four-track CD of rock music written by a pair of French musicians, intended to “leave some trace of humanity in the unknown and send a sign to any possible extra-terrestrial populations.”

Far be it from me to suggest there’s anything wrong with French rock music, but if you were in charge of selecting tracks for the CD, what would you choose?

Personally, I’d go with a selection of scary heavy metal songs — you know, tracks like Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” and “Black Sabbath” by, er, Black Sabbath. Hopefully, the CD would frighten any aliens who stumbled across it enough to make them reconsider any invasions of Earth they had planned.

I’d pick something really obscure and bizarre, and maybe Billy Ray Cyrus’s “Achey Brakey Heart” for good measure. That way if an intelligent group of exploring aliens found it, they’d study it to try to learn about our culture. Then when they land, everybody would think they were a bunch of losers with bad taste and be ridiculed.

The ray guns would take care of all those uppity cool kids…

Are we assuming the Saturn moon people have already developed CD players?

yes, assuming that people living on titan have developed laser technology, and furthermore cd technology, not to mention they are using the same method of encoding said compact discs…
my choices would be: Ministry-Jesus Built My Hotrod, Backstreet Boys-Backstreet’s Back, Burt Bacharach-Raindrops (Keep Fallin’ on My Head), and On by Aphex Twin.

And we’re also assuming that they occupy a physical form and can interact with this CD?

The first song that comes to mind is Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf. It worked for Zephram, I can work for us.

Also, you really need some Elvis on there. As for “scary” music, you need to go with Slipknot.

I can see Sting’s “Englishman in New York.” As soon as the Titanians hear “I’m an alien; I’m a legal alien,” they’ll be thinking they’ve been beaten in the race to invade us.

    slipknot does not scare me
mainly because i know the guy who produced their early stuff and he’s the biggest most hopeless geek i’ve had the displeasure to encounter.
