Adios, amigos!

I’m stepping away from the old computational engine for a few days, so posting here at Apropos of Something will be rare if not altogether nonexistent. Don’t worry, though; I’ll be back, kickin’ it live in the 0-5, yo. In the meantime, have a happy New Year!

New Year’s Resolution: Be More Evil
Posted on December 31, 2004
Instead of making a New Year’s resolution to be a better person or some nonsense like that, join me this year in resolving to be more evil in ‘05. After the jump, I’ve reviewed a few PC games that should help you get started. Muhahahaha!

All the pieces, pieces, pieces of *BURRRP*
Posted on December 30, 2004
It seems Ashlee Simpson is out to prove wrong everyone who called her a talentless hack following her Saturday Night Live lip-synching gaffe in October. From Ananova:
Ashlee Simpson says she can burp the alphabet.
The singer, who stars in her own MTV reality TV show, The Ashlee Simpson Show, says she loves showing of her special talent. She said: “When I burp the alphabet, my favourite letter is G. It is an open consonant and it is at the beginning when my wind is strong. My worst letter is S. It is a closed consonant and at the end when I am out of wind.”
The 19-year-old star also admitted that older sister Jessica also shares the same talent.
She told America’s New York Post newspaper: “Jessica burps the alphabet better than me. She has better wind and she is a much louder belcher.”
A passion for belching, eh? You know, that might explain the acid reflux. Meanwhile, Ashlee, a word of advice: if you’re having some trouble with your S’s and other closed consonants, you might consider using a backing track. All the best belching pop stars do it, and it should free you up to concentrate on your choreography.

Oh, rats!
Posted on December 29, 2004
Via Fark, it’s the latest Biblical plague to sweep the Sunshine State:
Giant Rats Invade Florida Keys
Biologists say an unwelcome species of rat that grows as big as raccoons has turned up in the Keys.
Conservationists say the African Gambian pouch rat needs to be eradicated before it starts to harm native species in the Keys. It’s unclear how the rat was released on Grassy Key, but scientists say the omnivores are a threat because they eat almost anything.
The giant pouch rat can weigh up to 9 pounds. Biologists say it would compete for food with native species, carry diseases, and damage the bird population by eating eggs.
Wouldn’t you know it? I’m visiting the Florida Keys for the first time next week, and now they’re under attack by monster rats (not to be confused with Montserrat, which I understand is quite lovely this time of year). On the bright side, maybe all the simulated rat-slaying I’ve done in computer roleplaying games through the years will end up being time well spent after all. If I play my cards right and remember to pack a sword, perhaps I can gain enough experience points to level-up before I return from vacation.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Posted on December 27, 2004
More than any other movie this year, I was looking forward to Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic, and I admit that I was dismayed to see critics giving the film mixed reviews. Nevertheless, I caught a showing this evening, and found it to be an absolute joy — a funny, yet poignant tale of an aging oceanographer in search of the shark that killed his best friend. Anderson brings the same playful, detail-oriented filmmaking style to The Life Aquatic that he showcased in Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums, and Bill Murray gives what I would say is easily one of the best performances of his career.
The Life Aquatic receives the official Apropos of Something seal of approval. Highly recommended. My updated top ten movies of 2004 follow after the jump.

One last bit of holiday nonsense
Posted on December 24, 2004
I love me some Christmas music, but I’ll be the first to admit that not all holiday songs are created equal. If you could choose one Christmas song never to have to hear again in your life, what would it be? For me, it’s no contest: “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.” Ugh.

It’s just not the holiday season if you haven’t heard SNL’s Horatio Sanz, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Kattan, and Tracy Morgan perform “I Wish It Was Christmas Today” at least once (download removed).
Season’s greetings from all of us here at Apropos of Something! Namely, me.

Meet the Beastles
Posted on December 21, 2004
The Beastie Boys bust phat rhymes over the slammin’ beats of those mop-topped lads from Liverpool — ladies and gentlemen, please put your hands together for the Beastles. I’m definitely grooving on “Tripper Trouble” (the Beasties’ recent single “Triple Trouble” meets “Day Tripper” by the Fab Four). Spotted at Stereogum.
