‘Cause I’m the taxman

Drudge reports the rumor that the elimination of the IRS will be a domestic centerpiece for Bush and the Republicans in the upcoming election. Um…I can honestly say I didn’t see that coming (link via Wizbang).
REPUBLICANS PLAN PUSH FOR ELIMINATION OF IRS
**Exclusive**
A domestic centerpiece of the Bush/GOP agenda for a second Bush term is getting rid of the Internal Revenue Service, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.
The Speaker of the House will push for replacing the nation’s current tax system with a national sales tax or a value added tax, Hill sources tell DRUDGE.
Of course, the standard disclaimer applies here: grain of salt, etc. If you ask me, the idea of Bush — much less the Republican Party as a whole — adopting this stance for the upcoming election seems a bit far-fetched. After all, if Bush is really interested in pushing a revamped domestic agenda, why rock the boat with something so radical as eliminating the federal income tax? From the standpoint of campaign strategy, it seems to me like quite a risk with the uncertain promise of reward when it’s all said and done. Then again, stranger things have happened.
If I were in President Bush’s shoes, I’d continue to keep my domestic policy as vague as possible (tough on crime, improve education, lower taxes, etc.) — slightly right of center, but nothing too extreme. After all, I can’t help but think that this election won’t ultimately come down to domestic politics anyway. Instead, for the first time in several years, people will actually be paying attention to foreign policy and national security for a change. Why throw something as seemingly random as a proposal to eliminate the IRS into the mix?
Then again, I suppose one should never underestimate the propensity of the American public to vote to abolish taxes — even if it’s not always the best idea in the long run.

Who replaced GWB with Steve Forbes?
Maybe GW’s corporate puppeteers are thinking beyond 2004. After all, if Bush does win in November, who could possibly beat Hill and Bill in 2008? The Rebublicans will be facing another 8-year Clinton dynasty. Maybe the time to take a risk is now.
Abolish The IRS?
There has been a lot of banter going around recently about the elimination of the IRS in favor of a national Valued-Added Tax (VAT) or a National Sales Tax (NST). Dennis Hastert, the current house speaker and an Illinois Republican,…
