About the 655tx

The Fujitsu Lifebook 655tx is a ultraslim notebook with a Pentium 150MMX processor and a 12.1 inch active matrix screen. The video chip is the CT65550 and it has 2MB of VRAM, supporting 800x600 at 24bpp, or 1024x768 at 16bpp on an external monitor. Sound is provided via an ESS chipset, which is Soundblaster compatible. The hard drive has a capacity of 1.3gig, and an optional snap-on docking bay provides a CD-ROM drive and Floppy drive. The laptop, without the external battery, weighs around 4.5 lbs.

Kernel Configuration

The main things to watch out for in the kernel is APM support. Do Not enable console blanking using APM, because, for some unknown reason, you won't be able to get the screen turned back on (at least using XFree86-3.3.1). Enabling SoundBlaster support should let sound work. If you are running RedHat 5.0, you can use my customized kernel RPMS, available on my FTP Server. They have the proper APM support compiled in, the sound modules, and support for the built in trackpad.

XFree86 Configuration

Here's a working XF86Config from my system that supports 800x600 at 24bpp (I think you could also make 32bpp work, I forgot to try). Also, I'll take this opportunity to plug KDE, my take for the coolest Desktop Environment around (I mean, hey, there's a laptop on their home page).

Other Information

More information about running Linux on laptops can be found (interestingly enough) at the Linux on Laptops website. There are also links to other laptop-centric information there.
