General Comments:
The Brazilian Bug virus was discovered in May, 1992. It is
originally from Brazil, and may date back to late 1990. This
virus is a non-resident, direct action infector of .COM
programs, but not COMMAND.COM.
When a program infected with the Brazilian Bug is executed, the
virus will infect all .COM programs other than COMMAND.COM located
in the current directory. Once it completes infecting all the
.COM programs, it will display the following message:
" ****** HELLO FRIEND ******
WE ARE SORRY TO INFORM YOU THAT YOUR
SYSTEM IS VERY ILL
AND WILL NOT SURVIVE
MUCH LONGER
YOU UNFORTUNATELY HAVE
- THE BRAZILIAN BUG -
FOR WHICH THERE IS NO CURE
WE HOPE THIS WILL NOT BE AN INCONVENIENCE TO YOU
LOVE,
THE MAGIK MUSICIANS"
The host program will then complete execution.
Programs infected with the Brazilian Bug will have a file length
increase of 1,343 bytes with the virus being located at the end
of the infected file. The program's date and time will have been
updated to the current system date and time when infection
occurred. All of the above text strings are visible in the viral
code in infected programs.
