General Comments:
The Wave virus was submitted in March, 1993. Its origin or point of
isolation is unknown. Wave is a memory resident infector of .COM
programs, including COMMAND.COM. It does not infect .COM programs
located on the A: drive.
When the first Wave infected program is executed, the Wave virus
will install itself memory resident in available system memory,
hooking interrupt 21. Total system and available free memory, as
indicated by the DOS CHKDSK program, will not be altered.
Once the Wave virus is memory resident, it will infect .COM programs,
including COMMAND.COM, when they are executed. Infected programs
will have a file length increase of 454 bytes with the virus being
located at the end of the file. The file's date and time in the
DOS disk directory listing will not be altered. No text strings are
visible within the viral code.
The Wave virus will create a companion .COM program for each .EXE
program the user executes. These companion files contain a copy of
the .EXE program, and are not infected. They appear to simply take
up disk space.
