General Comments:
The Quiet virus was discovered in the State of Kansas in the
United States in January, 1992. Quiet is a memory resident infector
of .COM programs, but not COMMAND.COM. It's point of discovery
was in a computer repair facility, so it is believed to be in the
public domain.
When the first Quiet infected program is executed, the Quiet virus
will install itself memory resident as a low system memory TSR of
2,304 bytes. The virus will have hooked interrupts 16, 21, and 64.
Once the Quiet virus is memory resident, it will infect .COM
programs other than COMMAND.COM when they are executed. Quiet
infected programs will have a file length increase of 2,048 to
2,063 bytes with the virus being located at the end of the infected
program. The file's date and time in the DOS disk directory listing
will not have been altered. The following text strings can be
found in the last 2K of Quiet infected programs:
"DNAMMOC"
"COM COM"
"t=1024 /write=off /win /quiet"
It is unknown what the Quiet virus does besides replicate.
