About the Space Quest Series
Game box art and brief descriptions
Box art Description
Space Quest 1 Space Quest I: The Sarien Encounter
Release Date: October 1986

This was the game that started it all! Designed by Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy, the self-styled Two Guys from Andromeda, Space Quest I introduces us to Roger Wilco, a hapless janitor stationed aboard the starship Arcada. When evil Sariens board the ship and steal the experimental Star Generator, Roger is the only crew member left alive. Can he escape the ship and stop the Sariens from taking over the galaxy? Created using Sierra's AGI engine, the game features classic 16-color graphics and a text parser interface that defined early adventure gaming.

Space Quest 2 Space Quest II: Vohaul's Revenge
Release Date: November 1987

Despite receiving the coveted Golden Mop for his galaxy-saving antics in Space Quest I, Roger Wilco finds himself once again serving as a lowly sanitation engineer, this time aboard Xenon Orbital Station 4. Fate intervenes, however, when he is kidnapped by Sludge Vohaul, the nefarious genius behind the original Star Generator incident. Now it's up to Roger to escape Vohaul's clutches and stop him from unleashing an army of genetically engineered door-to-door insurance salesmen on the galaxy!

Space Quest 3 Space Quest III: The Pirates of Pestulon
Release Date: March 1989

After Roger Wilco drifts through space in cryosleep for an indeterminate length of time, Space Quest III opens with a garbage freighter mistaking his escape pod for space debris and bringing it aboard. Trapped on the freighter, Roger discovers and repairs a small ship called the Aluminum Mallard, then sets off to explore the galaxy (and grab a bite to eat at Monolith Burger). Before long, he stumbles into another adventure: the Two Guys from Andromeda have been captured by ScumSoft, Inc. and forced to churn out mindless video games against their will. Can Roger rescue them before it's too late? With Sierra's new SCI engine and support for sound cards, the Space Quest series had never looked or sounded better!

Space Quest 4 Space Quest IV: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers
Release Date: March 1991

Sludge Vohaul is back, and this time he's brought his Sequel Police with him! The evil scientist from Space Quest II, still bent on revenge against his nemesis Roger Wilco, has seized control of the timeline and is twisting it to his own ends. Now Roger must travel to Space Quest X, Space Quest XII, and even all the way back to Space Quest I to stop him. Along the way, he also learns about his future wife, a mysterious woman named Beatrice. Space Quest IV is the first game in the series to feature 256-color graphics and Sierra's icon-based point-and-click interface.

Space Quest 1 VGA Space Quest I: Roger Wilco in the Sarien Encounter VGA
Release Date: August 1991

Relive Roger Wilco's first adventure in stunning 256-color VGA with an entirely new soundtrack! Yes, it's the Sarien Encounter we all know and love, now upgraded to Sierra's point-and-click interface. The plot remains the same: space janitor, evil Sariens, Star Generator, and so on. This time around, however, it's rendered in a kitschy 1950s sci-fi aesthetic that reimagines the original adventure with a colorful retro flair. It's time to save the galaxy for the first time — again!

Space Quest 5 Space Quest V: The Next Mutation
Release Date: March 1993

Designed by Guy from Andromeda Mark Crowe and developed at Dynamix, Space Quest V finds a slightly more ambitious Roger Wilco enrolled at StarCon Academy. After a minor scoring glitch on his aptitude test, Roger is awarded command of the SCS Eureka, a garbage scow on a mission to clean up the universe. Along with his intrepid crew of fellow StarCon washouts, Roger stumbles onto a conspiracy to pollute the galaxy with mutagenic ooze. Can he stop the Sludge Bandits in time and rescue Ambassador Beatrice Wankmeister before it's too late?

Space Quest 6 Space Quest 6: The Spinal Frontier
Release Date: July 1995

Co-designed by Scott Murphy and "Third Guy from Andromeda" Josh Mandel, Space Quest 6 sees Roger Wilco returning to his roots after StarCon literally strips him of rank and reassigns him as Janitor Second Class aboard the SCS DeepShip 86. As usual, however, trouble has a way of finding Roger, and he soon becomes entangled in a plot by the sinister Sharpei. What is Project Immortality, and what does it have to do with Roger's friend, Corpsman Stellar Santiago? Play Space Quest 6, featuring 640x480 Super VGA graphics, to find out!

About the Creators

The Two Guys from AndromedaThe Space Quest series was created by Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy, the Two Guys from Andromeda. After working together on earlier Sierra titles like King's Quest II, Mark and Scott decided to pitch their idea for a sci-fi counterpart to Sierra's flagship franchise. After building a short demo, they convinced Sierra On-Line co-founder and CEO Ken Williams to greenlight the project. While the design duo parted ways after Space Quest IV, they would later reunite in 2012 to launch a Kickstarter campaign for their Space Quest spiritual successor, SpaceVenture (now in Early Access on Steam).

About the Company

Sierra LogoCo-founded in 1978 by Ken and Roberta Williams in the mountain town of Oakhurst, California, Sierra On-Line was the industry's leading developer of graphic adventure games in the 1980s and 1990s. After pioneering the genre with the release of Mystery House in 1980, Sierra went on to even greater success with franchises like King's Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Police Quest, Quest for Glory, Gabriel Knight, and of course, Space Quest. The company ultimately shut down in the late 1990s after a series of buyouts and mergers. Nevertheless, their innovative games continue to influence the modern adventure genre decades later.
